Ch. 981Guard Zhang Was Wooing Another Princess Again
Plot points and events
- Tan Chencheng arrives in her imperial form and casually knocks aside the Bright Net Soul-Illuminating Demon King. Though her attack should have killed him, he remains unharmed.
- She teases Zhang Yuan about supposedly longing for the Fifth Princess, then learns he has become ruler of the Bright Rosy Kingdom. Zhang explains that the position came about by chance and insists he plans to abdicate once the crisis is over.
- Tan Chencheng reassures him that she has concealed the city, preventing even Demon Realm Golden Core True Lords from discovering his presence. She asks about the Demon King, but Zhang can offer little information about the Six Heavenly Demon Kings.
- Upper-String True Person bluntly clarifies that Ye Xiangning is not present.
- Zhao Lian, Wei Liu, Wei Jianxing, and others arrive. Zhang tells Zhao Lian that the capital’s crisis has been resolved and repeats his intention to hand over the throne.
- Tan Chencheng notices Zhang’s connections with Zhao Lian and another young woman, introduces herself as Great Heng’s current emperor, and blames Zhang—playfully—for refusing to take that throne himself.
Character developments and interactions
- Zhang Yuan remains evasive about power and authority, claiming to seek only the Dao and planning to give up the Bright Rosy throne. He is relieved by Tan Chencheng’s protection and tries to flatter her, though she sees through him.
- Tan Chencheng displays overwhelming divine power and political authority. Her teasing, apparent jealousy, and complaints reveal an affectionate, familiar rapport with Zhang Yuan.
- Zhao Lian is relieved to find Zhang but reacts with irritation rather than gratitude, glaring at his self-satisfied remarks. She becomes solemn once she realizes who Tan Chencheng is.
- Upper-String True Person stays dry and direct, cutting off Zhang’s apparent hope that Ye Xiangning might be there.
Significant themes
- Power and responsibility: Zhang’s accidental rulership creates ties to the kingdom’s fate, which he fears may become difficult to escape.
- Affection expressed through teasing: Tan Chencheng’s jealousy and mock complaints suggest closeness with Zhang, while his smooth reassurances are treated as insincere.
- The limits of knowledge: Even powerful figures know little about ancient beings such as the Six Heavenly Demon Kings.
- Identity and political obligation: Tan Chencheng has moved from princess to emperor, while Zhang resists the very authority he has inadvertently acquired.
