Ch. 21Transformation Pill (44k)
Plot and key events
- Liu Yu defeats the Amethyst Winged Lion King with his red-snake technique. The Lion King submits and becomes Liu Yu’s mount, partly encouraged by the promise of pills.
- Yun Yun invites Liu Yu to return with her to the Misty Cloud Sect, but he declines because he has other plans. She leaves after asking him to visit when he is free.
- Liu Yu intends to secure the Jia Ma Empire portion of the Magical Beast Mountain Range as a future home for the Snake-People Tribe. With the Lion King’s help, he confronts three other sixth-rank beasts. Two are quickly killed; the third, the proud Ice Crystal Jade Python King, refuses to submit and is killed after Liu Yu gives it several chances.
- The Lion King collects the beasts’ treasures. Among them are ingredients that, combined with the earlier spoils, form a complete set for a seventh-grade Transformation Pill.
- Liu Yu prepares the pill while the Lion King guards him. After seven days, the pill draws powerful lightning. Liu Yu weakens the bolt with his Heaven-Burning Palm, finishes it with sword strikes, and uses his soul power to prevent the pill from escaping.
Character development and interactions
- Liu Yu establishes himself as a forceful, ambitious leader: he recruits the Lion King, plans to claim territory for the Snake-People Tribe, and kills beasts that refuse to submit. He also shows growing confidence as an alchemist by attempting a high-grade seventh-rank pill, though he recognizes the danger and difficulty.
- The Amethyst Winged Lion King shifts from proud ruler to eager, accommodating servant. He follows Liu Yu’s orders, gathers spoils, guards the refining process, and hopes to receive a Transformation Pill so he can gain a human form while retaining his beast form.
- Yun Yun shows clear affection and reluctance to part from Liu Yu, but her responsibilities as sect leader require her to leave. Liu Yu’s farewell is warm but noncommittal.
- Liu Yu and the Lion King develop a playful master-servant rapport: Liu Yu gives him the teasing name “Little Purple,” while the Lion King flatters him in hopes of winning the pill.
Significant themes
- Power and submission: Liu Yu’s overwhelming strength lets him impose order on the mountain’s beasts, while the Python King’s pride leads to its death.
- Ambition and expansion: Liu Yu’s campaign is part of a larger plan to establish a home for the Snake-People Tribe.
- Loyalty and self-interest: The Lion King’s obedience is genuine enough to be useful, but his hopes for a Transformation Pill also motivate it.
- Transformation and advancement: The pill represents a major leap in a magical beast’s capabilities, while its perilous refinement demonstrates the costs and risks of cultivation.
