Zhao Yuejiao and the other two were in the office when they heard a rustling sound coming from the doorway, as though something was crawling.
Zhao Yuejiao had grown up poor and had to do many things herself, so she was a little braver. She grabbed a paper cutter and walked toward the door.
When she reached the door, she did not open it. Instead, she looked out through the frosted glass. She saw nothing, but the rustling continued.
Zhao Yuejiao thought the sound was coming from the gap beneath the door. Looking down, she saw several large cockroaches squeezing through it.
She breathed a sigh of relief and stomped on them hard. The cockroaches burst like bubbles, releasing a foul stench.
Zhao Yuejiao covered her nose and took a few steps back. Then her expression changed drastically as more and more cockroaches crawled through the gap.
She hurried backward, shouting, "There's insecticide in that cabinet! Get it out, quick! There are so many cockroaches!"
Liu Jun rushed to the cabinet and took out two cans of insecticide. She was about to call Liu Shourui over to help when she saw the fat man sprawled over the desk, clutching his head with both hands, his rump sticking up like a pig's.
Liu Jun shook her head helplessly. He was utterly useless; there was no counting on him. She hurried forward and sprayed the cockroaches with insecticide.
Far from dying after being sprayed, the cockroaches became especially lively, as though they had been dosed with stimulants.
Zhao Yuejiao grabbed a nearby mop and hammered at the cockroaches. Every one she killed burst with a pop, turning into shit-yellow liquid that gave off a foul stench.
The liquid hissed on the marble floor, quickly corroding it into a pitted mess.
Even an idiot could see by now that these were no ordinary cockroaches. They had come to kill them.
The firm's glass entrance shattered with a crash. Shards sprayed forward, leaving cuts all over the two women.
When Zhao Yuejiao and Liu Jun saw the corridor, their faces went white. Cockroaches covered the floor so densely that not a patch of marble was visible.
The cockroaches also tumbled over one another, forming balls that rolled rapidly forward. Anyone struck by one would surely be covered in cockroaches. The mere thought made their scalps crawl.
Zhao Yuejiao and Liu Jun retreated to Liu Shourui's side. Their legs trembled, and waves of urgency kept making them feel they were about to wet themselves. It was simply too terrifying.
The cockroach balls grew larger and larger as they rolled, slowly approaching the women. They were deliberately frightening them, making them feel the terror of death.
Liu Shourui got down from the desk too. The three kept retreating until they reached the window. Another step back, and they would be jumping out.
Zhao Yuejiao suddenly shouted, "I know you want revenge! That girl jumped from upstairs. We were indeed at fault, but we don't deserve to die for it.
"If you really want revenge, go after Wang Taiying! What's the point of coming after us? You're just a spineless coward who only picks on easy targets."
The cockroach balls stopped and transformed again, taking on the shape of a person. The insects writhed constantly, a nauseating sight.
The cockroach figure opened his mouth and actually spoke. "I recognize you. You visited my girl in the hospital and left some money. You're a decent person.
"You're right. That beast is the one who deserves to die. I'll kill her first, then come back for you. You can live a couple more days."
"Big talk for a bunch of disgusting cockroaches. Do you really think you're something special? You're not worth a damn in my eyes. Wang Taiying is a believer in God. It was that girl's good fortune to catch her eye."
Ye Zifeng stood in the doorway in his usual outfit, his expression cold and sinister. He certainly cut an impressive figure. In looks alone, Meng Huai could not compare with him at all.
The cockroaches writhed, and the figure's body changed, reversing its front and back to face Ye Zifeng.
The cockroach figure's eyes glowed red as he stared fixedly at Ye Zifeng, filled with hatred.
The cockroach figure gritted his teeth. "My girl was infected with heart-control gu. That's why she jumped. You did it."
Ye Zifeng spoke casually. "You can't blame me for that. You only have yourselves to blame for not knowing when to back down. You insisted on taking on something far beyond you and pursuing your lawsuit to the bitter end.
"We told you that you couldn't win, but you refused to listen. If we hadn't taught you a lesson, how would you have learned who you were dealing with? Mud is still mud. You can never plaster a wall with it."
The cockroach figure roared furiously, "You damned bastard! I'll make you pay! And that beast won't get an easy death either!"
Ye Zifeng snorted contemptuously. His dismissive manner only drove the cockroach figure into an even greater rage.
The cockroach figure swung both hands. They flew off his body, and thousands of cockroaches lunged at Ye Zifeng.
Disdain filled Ye Zifeng's face. He swung his hands as well, sending countless insects flying from his sleeves. Though smaller than the cockroaches, they tore them apart in an instant.
He was still feeling smug when yellow liquid suddenly seeped from the shredded cockroaches, enveloping his insects and dissolving them instantly.
Ye Zifeng's expression turned extremely ugly. He had not expected an attack that sacrificed the enemy's own forces along with his. Another large batch of the insects he had painstakingly raised was dead.
The cockroach figure burst apart with a bang. All the cockroaches surged toward him in a vast swarm, exploding in midair as yellow liquid rained down.
Ye Zifeng kept shaking his body. An insect emerged from every pore, covering him in a dense mass until he soon resembled a mummy.
The yellow liquid landed on Ye Zifeng, sending up clouds of white smoke. Great swathes of insects dissolved, exposing bloody flesh underneath.
Ye Zifeng roared in fury. He had never expected the cockroach figure to have such a trick. The insects he had painstakingly raised had been devastated yet again. His heart practically bled.
Ye Zifeng carefully put away his surviving insects, then shot Liu Shourui a vicious look. The fat bastard had collapsed on the floor and wet his pants in terror.
Ye Zifeng stepped forward and hauled the fat bastard up with one hand. Glaring at him, he said, "Listen carefully. If you dare spout nonsense online, I'll make you wish you were dead and deny you even that escape!
"Even if you really die, I'll drag your soul out of the Underworld and torture you for ten thousand years. Try me if you don't believe it."
"You really do talk a load of crap. If you were that capable, I wouldn't have beaten you like a dog last time. And now someone's left you looking like a plucked chicken."
Meng Huai walked in from outside with Yun Zimo. He had been watching the show for quite some time. Now it was his turn to take the stage.
Ye Zifeng looked at Meng Huai, his eyes blazing with rage. It was almost an exact replay of the scene moments earlier, only with their roles reversed.
