Ch. 341The Truth
Chapter Summary
Plot and key events
- A player, Song Cheng, posts a warning on the Immortal World forum: after an NPC possesses him in the game, the NPC can control his real-world body while Song is logged in. Other players soon share matching accounts and evidence, convincing the public that the game connects to a real world.
- The forum erupts in debate. Some fear a two-way invasion and call for a boycott, while others are eager to visit another world despite the danger. When the Game Company announces 500,000 new accounts, applications quickly replace the protests.
- Authorities respond by encouraging players to explore the other world, report discoveries and possession incidents, and cooperate with officials. They avoid calling the situation an “invasion,” but clearly intend to learn from the other civilization while preparing for possible conflict.
- Liu Dongming reacts very differently from Song Cheng: curious rather than frightened, he tries to communicate with the soul possessing him and proposes a bargain—he will explain modern society if the cultivator helps him in the game.
- News of possession reaches the game world. Its leaders learn that the supposedly immortal Heaven-Sent Ones are ordinary people from another world, where technology can rival powerful cultivators’ attacks. Meanwhile, cultivators are disadvantaged there: they cannot use their arts, and possession is risky and difficult.
- The Sacred Lord and others conclude that the Game Company is the real power behind the arrangement and that the influx of Heaven-Sent Ones may bring catastrophe. They reconsider Lin Bai’s efforts to unite the players, recognizing that he may have been trying to save their world. They also realize he had pointed toward a solution: mastering the Heavenly Dao and “Words Become Law” could shut the Heaven-Sent Ones out.
Character developments and interactions
- Song Cheng becomes a public whistleblower, urging players to fear possession and warning that Lin Bai may have learned the truth.
- Liu Dongming embraces the danger as an opportunity, seeking cooperation with the possessing cultivator instead of resisting it.
- The Sacred Lord, Qu Chao’an, Ye Luo, and the Devil Master move from shock and blame toward reassessing Lin Bai’s motives. Their discussion exposes their fear, resentment, and lack of a clear strategy.
- Ye Luo openly regrets that they misunderstood Lin Bai and sent him into the Tribulation Lightning. The Devil Master, however, still resents Lin Bai’s attacks and argues that he should have explained himself more clearly.
- The cultivators’ discussion highlights the imbalance between the worlds: players gain extraordinary advantages in the game world, while native cultivators lose their powers in the players’ world.
Significant themes
- Invasion and reciprocal vulnerability: Both worlds can threaten the other, though by very different means.
- Power, technology, and inequality: Cultivators are mighty at home but weakened abroad; ordinary players gain exceptional abilities in the game world.
- Self-interest versus collective responsibility: Song warns others, while Liu seeks personal advantage; the public and authorities likewise weigh danger against opportunity.
- Misunderstanding and hindsight: Lin Bai’s actions are reconsidered only after the truth emerges, but resentment and uncertainty remain.
- Control and identity: Possession raises the frightening question of who truly owns—and controls—a person’s body.
