Wen Ning sat in his chair and gave a rough account of what had happened last night.
As Zhang Siyu listened, the anger vanished from her face, replaced by an eager expression.
"I'm coming too."
Wen Ning glanced at her and shook his head almost without hesitation.
"No."
"Why not?"
Zhang Siyu's eyes went wide.
"I'm a disciple of Dragon-Tiger Mountain, too. How can you leave me out of something like this?"
"Someone needs to mind the shop."
Wen Ning cut her off, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"You're staying in the shop today. If a customer comes by, we can't leave them with nobody to help them.
Besides, we still don't know exactly what's going on. You wouldn't be much help even if you came."
But hearing him say she wouldn't be much help made Zhang Siyu freeze.
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something. He's right. Since when did I become someone who couldn't even help?
"Fine."
That was all Zhang Siyu said in the end, her voice much softer than before.
"Go, then."
Wen Ning glanced at her and noticed something flicker in her eyes, but she quickly turned away, stood up, and began clearing the table.
Wen Ning wanted to say something to smooth things over.
But on second thought, knowing Zhang Siyu, anything he said now would only rub salt in the wound. The more he tried to explain, the worse it would get, so he simply kept quiet.
When he came out, Zhang Siyu had already carried the dishes into the kitchen and was wiping down the counter. Wen Ning noticed that her movements were slower than usual, as though something was on her mind.
Wen Ning walked past her and changed his shoes by the door.
"You'll be home on
