When Wen Ning and Lu Ming arrived at the hospital, Lin Dagang was still in the emergency room.
The incandescent lights in the hospital corridor were blindingly bright.
The smell of disinfectant mingled with a faint trace of blood and crept into their noses. It was deeply unpleasant.
Lin Dagang's wife sat on a bench outside the emergency room, her hair disheveled and her face utterly pale, both hands clasped together.
Her eyes remained fixed on the emergency room door.
Her daughter huddled beside her, still wearing her schoolbag, her face buried in her mother's arm. Her shoulders trembled now and then; she was clearly still crying.
Wen Ning and Lu Ming kept their distance, standing against the wall at the other end of the corridor.
Lu Ming nudged Wen Ning with his elbow and lowered his voice.
"Are we just going to stand here and wait?"
"What else?"
Wen Ning glanced at him.
"You want to go in and help? Give him a breath of immortal energy so he can come back to life and try to kill himself again?"
Lu Ming ducked his head.
"Then forget it. It's not really the wasted breath of immortal energy I'm worried about. It's him trying to kill himself again."
Wen Ning curled his lip.
"Figures."
With that, his gaze settled on the mother and daughter.
He was beginning to have an idea.
The Golden Register would not give him a task for no reason. Lin Dagang's ordeal probably had little to do with his physical injuries.
Nearly another hour passed before the emergency room door suddenly opened.
A doctor in dark green surgical scrubs stepped out, his mask half removed and his face weary. Lin Dagang's wife sprang to her feet, her voice already hoarse.
