Background / History

Wen Zhong fought in the Investiture of the Gods War and was placed on the Investiture of the Gods List through that conflict. He subsequently became the foremost deity of the Thunder Department. His teacher is Golden Spirit Holy Mother, whose Heavenly Court position is Dipper Mother; her master is the Heavenly Lord of Primordial Beginning 2 17 126 132.

Wen Ning’s parents brought their son to ask Wen Zhong to become his godfather. Wen Zhong accepted, and Wen Ning’s health improved afterward. For more than twenty years, Wen Ning worshipped him without knowing whether he truly existed. Dipper Mother later identifies Wen Ning as the first person in the Three Realms whom Wen Zhong has ever been willing to accept as a godson 1 4 17 55.

Appearance

Wen Zhong’s relatively unassuming stature contrasts with his oppressive divine presence, which is compared to the warning signs of a thunderstorm. When standing above the Canglang River, he appears as immovable as a mountain despite not being particularly tall or imposing 84 141.

  • Purple official robes — Lightning patterns ripple across the fabric 4 81.
  • Lightning-lit eyes — Lightning glimmers in his gaze during Wen Ning’s interview 4.
  • Celestial Eye — His heavenly eye gleams and flickers with lightning when he confronts Lu Ming 186 187.
  • Deep voice — His speech is low and firm, often revealing little emotion 4 126.
  • Habitual posture — Frequently stands with his hands clasped behind his back 6 132 141.

Personality

Wen Zhong is stern, reserved, and accustomed to immediate obedience. A sharply placed teacup silences the interview room, while his scrutiny makes even Wen Ning uneasy. He continues to treat his adult godson as a child, dismissing questions about sensitive history or unexplained destinations rather than indulging his curiosity 4 126 146.

His affection usually takes practical forms: teaching spells, supplying cultivation resources, arranging assistance, and preparing safeguards. He gives Wen Ning a rare immortal peach while claiming it is merely about to expire, and emphasizes his safe return after the Yamamoto operation. His praise is equally specific: he commends Wen Ning’s judgment and the trust he has earned from monsters rather than simply celebrating his combat ability 16 41 49 138.

With old friends, Wen Zhong is considerably warmer. He trades accusations of favoritism with the Lord of Mount Tai and embraces Golden Turtle upon his return. His humor can also be intimidating: after catching Lu Ming spreading rumors, he threatens to take the deer’s antlers as a tonic, then relents out of consideration for his old friend 5 187 263.

Abilities & Skills

Thunder Arts and Divine Presence

Wen Zhong controls access to the Five Thunder Righteous Method, the Thunder Department’s closely guarded signature art. His own presence is powerful enough to immobilize the Evil Flood Dragon that Wen Ning cannot defeat 6 141.

  • Refuses to teach the Five Thunder Righteous Method to outsiders, despite celestial generals’ interest in learning it 6.
  • Produces a soft purple light at his fingertip when imparting the method to Wen Ning 6.
  • Directs the Thunder Department’s generals and thunder drums, whose strikes suppress the dragon’s baleful energy 141.
  • Is later credited with finishing off the Canglang River Flood Dragon 143.

Direct and Remote Instruction

Wen Zhong can transmit complete techniques directly into another person’s consciousness, both through physical contact and from a distance 6 138.

  • Five Thunder Righteous Method — Plants its methods in Wen Ning’s mind by touching the space between his brows 6.
  • Cultivation guidance — Teaches the qi-circulation route Wen Ning uses to convert merit into cultivation 30 54 75.
  • Thirty-Six Heavenly Transformations — Remotely transmits the art when Wen Ning requests help against the Flood Dragon 138.
  • Earth-Covering Golden Light — Emphasizes this escape technique, which allows travel as golden light over a thousand miles in an instant 138.
  • Spirit Roaming and Qi Control — Wen Ning explicitly attributes his knowledge of this transformation to his godfather 210.

His instruction does not remove the student’s physical limitations: Wen Ning initially exhausts himself using thunder arts because he lacks cultivation and magical power 6 16.

Communication Through Worship

Wen Zhong can hear Wen Ning speaking to his statue, including before Wen Ning learns that his godfather is real 6.

  • Responds to prayers through phone messages, including cultivation assessments and practical advice 30 66 75.
  • Forms an instruction in incense smoke when Wen Ning asks for help with Wang Manman’s case 125.
  • Sends remote instruction in response to an urgent request rather than requiring an in-person meeting 138.

Administration and Investigation

As Thunder Department chief, Wen Zhong handles appointments, assignments, official reports, and punishment. His workload includes rainmaking approvals, reports of demons troubling the mortal world, and reincarnation anomalies copied from the Underworld 6 15 126 185.

  • Approves Wen Ning’s probationary appointment and requisitions his agency as the department’s mortal-world office 6 15.
  • Reviews cases in detail, allowing Wen Ning to explain the Xiao Ya investigation without interruption 40 41.
  • Uses personal contacts and official introductions to support investigations across institutions 22 126 128.
  • Studies a Three Realms map marked with spiritual-energy nodes, predictions, and deployment plans 132.

His authority has explicit boundaries. Buddhist affairs fall outside his jurisdiction, and he cannot override Dipper Mother’s order that Wen Ning’s bathhouse sign remain in place 41 126.

Equipment / Items

  • Great seal — Used to authenticate Wen Ning’s appointment scroll. Its vermilion impression bears Wen Zhong’s divine title and contains faintly flowing lightning 6.
  • Divine seal prepared for the Flood Dragon incident — Secretly orders Lu Ming to retrieve the seal of the Heavenly Venerable of Universal Transformation through the Thunder of the Nine Heavens after teaching Wen Ning an escape technique 138.
  • Three-thousand-year immortal peach — Gives Wen Ning a peach from the Queen Mother’s Peach Garden, establishing his Earth Immortal cultivation and enabling safer use of thunder arts 16.

Wang Manman and the Buddhist Investigation

After learning that Tang Sanzang has reincarnated without official notification, he directs Wen Ning to Sun Wukong at Mount Huaguo and advises bringing peaches 125 126 127 128.

False Dragon King and Xuan Yin’s Sentence

Wen Zhong assigns the investigation of a monster occupying a Dragon King Temple and explains that Lu Ming’s posting is meant to benefit both young officials. When Xuan Yin is brought before him, he imposes five hundred years of imprisonment and adds another five hundred for protesting. In private, Wen Ning then admits that another snake was the culprit; Wen Zhong has already guessed the truth and accepts the correction provided someone takes responsibility 176 185 186.

Golden Turtle’s Return

Wen Zhong sends Wen Ning undercover to investigate Golden Turtle’s monster organization, Black Sèhuì, while pursuing an opportunity for his old friend’s rehabilitation. He stresses that the mission is reconnaissance, not a demand to risk Wen Ning’s life. After Master Jin returns, Wen Zhong explains that a quiet investigation avoided the attention and procedures of a formal Heavenly Court inquiry; the supplied passage ends before he states his second reason 252 253 263.

Trivia

  • Wen Zhong and Wen Ning share a surname, a coincidence Dipper Mother explicitly remarks upon 17.

  • He refuses to correct Black Sèhuì’s misspelled sign personally, declaring that going down to the mortal world merely to fix it would be beneath him 252.
