Background / History

Haotian awakens memories from a past life after becoming the Heavenly Emperor. Recognizing that the great sects may reduce him to a puppet or remove him from the throne, he adopts an ambitious, ruthless approach to establish his authority over the Primordial World. His first Peach Banquet doubles as a test of the Chan and Jie Teachings; he suppresses their disciples and refuses to defer to Primordial Heavenly Venerate without cause. 1

He frames his reign as a necessary source of order. At the banquet, he establishes a covenant against indiscriminate slaughter, disruption of cause and effect, disruption of world order, and cultivators carrying heavy karma. 4 He subsequently addresses the northern region’s Grievance and Fiendish Energy, sharing the resulting merit with Yaochi, Yaoji, and Tai Bai Jin Xing rather than monopolizing it. 5 6

Haotian strengthens his position through Dao Ancestor Hongjun, who recognizes him as a teacher’s disciple in all but name and grants him the Chaos Bell, Investiture of the Gods, and Great Grade Heavenly Immortal Art. Hongjun also assists him in refining the two treasures. 9 10
