Background / History

Tang Ling’er grew up on Mount Qingcheng, where her grandfather, Tang Chen, and his disciples indulged her. Tang Chen taught her about cultivation from childhood and eventually entrusted her with the Yao Light Sword after she repeatedly asked for it 32 67 76 383.

Her father, Tang Shaojie, disappeared, and her mother, Luo Qingyao, remained unconscious for ten years afterward. Tang Chen spent more than a decade gathering the ingredients needed to awaken Qingyao, leaving Ling’er to grow up without her mother’s participation in her childhood 130 381 382 394.

Seeking a change of scenery, Ling’er decided to attend Jinling University. To distract her grandfather from objecting, she falsely accused her senior brothers of watching her bathe. Tang Chen believed her and broke their legs. Senior Brother Huang escaped punishment because he had been away buying supplies, then received the unwelcome assignment of guarding her at university 22 39.

Appearance

Tang Ling’er has a petite build, large, clear eyes, and a lively, youthful appearance. Her oversized sword case creates a striking contrast with her small stature 31 42.

  • Clothing: Appears in green during freshman registration and blue when arriving for military training 30 39.
  • Sword case: Carries a long, heavy wooden case, described as black and nearly as tall as she is 31 39.
  • Waist pouch: Wears a deerskin pouch used to carry Mantou and the Spirit-Sealing Register 30 32 121.
  • Family resemblance: Closely resembles Luo Qingyao in features, height, and figure. After Qingyao’s recovery, the two look young enough to pass for sisters 382 391 392.
  • Campus recognition: Named among Jinling University’s new Top Ten Campus Beauties 42.

Personality

Ling’er is outspoken, mischievous, and quick-tempered. She rejects Han Wenqi’s authority, mocks Song Yi’s accusations, and threatens Senior Brother Huang with a fabricated assault allegation to make him leave her alone. Her deceptions can have serious consequences: she also allows her senior brothers to take the blame for medicinal herbs she secretly fed to Mantou 31 32 39 381.

Her fierceness extends to protecting people and creatures she loves. She shields Mantou from the Student Union, faces armed police for Li Yichen, and immediately interrupts her reunion with him when she hears her mother fighting outside. She also becomes furious upon learning that Duan Mingyu murdered Zhou Yixuan 31 98 102 400.

Despite her confidence, she is vulnerable to loneliness and romantic insecurity. Li Yichen’s absence leaves her drinking alone on Fengxiang Peak, and jealousy repeatedly drives her to confront perceived rivals. She nevertheless distinguishes other relationships from dishonesty: before returning to Mount Qingcheng, she tells Li that being lied to frightens her more than his involvement with other women 52 132 392 401.

Her affection for animals is genuine but sometimes misguided. She secretly added powerful medicinal herbs to ordinary pets’ food, believing the herbs would strengthen them; Li Yichen recognized that ordinary animals could not withstand their potency 114.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship and Sword Control

Ling’er combines close-range swordplay with remotely directed attacks and sword energy 43 121.

  • Uses the Heaven and Earth, Boundless Universe Sword Technique to direct her sword toward Xia, changing its course through hand seals 121.
  • Cuts the red threads connecting Li Yichen and Ouyang Xuanxuan during their exchange at military training 42.
  • Cannot overcome Li Yichen’s Netherworld Veil, which traps her flying sword 121.

Sword Flight

Ling’er flies by forming sword seals and riding the Yao Light Sword 79 132 383.

  • Uses sword flight for travel, pursuit, and entering her dormitory through an open window 55 112 132.
  • Explains that her flight relies chiefly on the sword’s own power rather than her cultivation 79.
  • Gives its maximum carrying capacity as 75 kilograms, preventing her from carrying Su Xiaoxiao during their escape 79.

Ghost Sealing

Ling’er uses the Spirit-Sealing Register to capture and contain ghosts 22 121.

  • Captures fleeing ghosts on Mount Qingcheng 22.
  • Activates the register with an incantation, producing descending golden light intended to seal Xia 121.
  • The register’s contents can escape if its scroll is damaged, as happens when Mantou tears it open 52.

Her incantations and hand seals can produce protective, restraining, and offensive golden light 55 66.

  • Breaks free of the Dream Demon’s hold and destroys it after Li Yichen attempts to sacrifice himself for her 55.
  • Immobilizes the corrupted Mantou in midair with the command “Heaven as the lock, earth as the prison” 66.

Soul-Summoning Technique

Ling’er describes soul summoning as her specialty 83.

  • Requires a medium belonging to the target, such as hair or worn clothing 83.
  • Cannot summon Li Xiucheng for the treasure search because Li Yichen has no suitable personal item 83.

Physical Strength

Her small stature conceals considerable strength 31 41.

  • Carries a wooden sword case heavy enough to make the ground tremble slightly when set down 31.
  • Swings the case through a wide arc, generating a gust that stops Student Union members from advancing 31.
  • The case’s weight surprises Su Xiaoxiao when she offers to carry it 41.

Cultivation Knowledge and Perception

Tang Chen’s instruction gives Ling’er familiarity with cultivation, supernatural threats, and magical treasures 67.

  • Identifies lightning tribulation and warns that nearby bystanders would increase its danger 63.
  • Recognizes the Nine Chrysanthemum Sect’s Dreamlike Blood Butterflies and their mind-controlling effects 76.
  • Recognizes the supposedly lost Round Light Technique and asks Li Yichen to teach it to her; he agrees, but her mastery is not shown 99.
  • Detects a spiritual-energy-like scent on Li Yichen and later notices perfume and Ouyang Xuanxuan’s scent on him 32 98 131.
  • Can keep rain from touching her body, but cannot yet use the divine sense required to read the Peace Essentials jade slip 67 86.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Yao Light Sword — A sword given to her by Tang Chen and identified as one of the Seven-Star Demon-Subduing Swords. During the Dream Demon incident, it leaves its case to assist Li Yichen; its starlight damages the entity without harming the red threads linking it to Ling’er 54 76 383.
  • Black wooden sword case — Holds her sword and doubles as an improvised weapon 31 54.
  • Spirit-Sealing Register — Stores captured ghosts. Mantou’s accidental release of its contents leads to both Ling’er’s possession and Mantou’s later corruption 22 52 65.
  • Deerskin pouch — Carries Mantou and the register 30 32 121.
  • Youth-Restoring Pearl necklace — A gift from Li Yichen that preserves youth when worn against the skin. Set in a platinum chain, it becomes a declared love token and supplies powder for Luo Qingyao’s medicine 71 131 381.
  • Space Ring — Made and presented by Li Yichen. Ling’er initially dismisses its appearance before learning what it is 97 98 402.
  • Spirit-stone bracelet — A colorful bracelet with spirit-stone charms, given to her at Hidden Dragon Manor 394.

  • Li Yichen — Boyfriend, whom she also calls her husband. Their teasing acquaintance develops through combat, rescue, and mutual affection. She eventually accepts his other girlfriends after demanding recognition and fair treatment; no wedding is documented 43 55 132 392 401 402.

  • Tang Shaojie — Missing father. His disappearance precedes Luo Qingyao’s ten-year unconsciousness 130 394.
