Background / History
Li Yichen is a poor university student from a rural background, with his ancestral home in Hebei. At nineteen, he is a second-year student at Jinling University. He has no cultivation-sect affiliation 10 181 162.
He and his father are the only two remaining members of Haoran’s family branch identified during their reunion. Haoran recognizes Yichen as his tenth-generation descendant, although Yichen habitually addresses the much older ancestor as his “great-grandfather” 4 5.
The Li family’s elaborate ancestral ritual is Blood-Led Incense Burning, an ancient shamanic practice restricted to blood relatives. Each incense stick grants the recipient a year’s worth of cultivation. Haoran recognizes Yichen as the source of three recent offerings and credits him with helping achieve his Ghost Emperor breakthrough 4 5 6.
Their first meeting takes place at the White Temple. Mistaking Haoran’s approach for an attack, Yichen distracts him and strikes him with a brick, without effect. He then tries to flee after realizing his ancestor is a ghost, only to be immobilized by frozen space 4.
Yichen initially wants supernatural skills as a way to earn money. Haoran judges his natural cultivation aptitude poor, but compensates by giving him the Netherworld Ghost Body and Great Netherworld Scripture. The transformed constitution—and the modern world’s abundant negative energy—allow him to progress much faster than Haoran originally did 6 7 16.
Appearance
Li Yichen is repeatedly described as exceptionally handsome, attracting attention from classmates and women he meets outside the university 10 38 183.
- Height: Six feet 10.
- Weight: At least 165 pounds 10.
- Outward appearance: Remains physically human despite his Netherworld Ghost Body and can switch between human and ghost-body forms 6 7.
- Forehead mark: Haoran places a jet-black lotus talisman on his forehead; it normally disappears from view but manifests during supernatural communication 7 30 369.
- Cultivation manifestations: Yin-yang fish briefly appear in his pupils after reaching Golden Core. Black-and-white markings flicker on his forehead during his insight into life and death 61 159.
Personality
Yichen is irreverent, opportunistic, and quick to improvise. He bargains with Haoran over money and family obligations, flatters Black and White Impermanence to avoid being taken away, and turns his powers toward practical conveniences as readily as combat. Even after receiving extraordinary gifts, he asks his ancestor for a ride back to school 5 6 7 10.
His ambition is matched by a willingness to endure pain. He accepts the dangerous process of subduing the Yin-Yang Twin Flames because he believes strength requires a price. He also seeks martial instruction because he dislikes being pushed around 27 60.
He can be courteous and considerate despite his growing status. He asks famous martial masters to address him by name, prevents Black Impermanence from punishing Ouyang Xuanxuan for the car accident, and spares a classmate from fulfilling a humiliating stone-eating bet. His decision to buy the courier shop is partly motivated by easing his parents’ financial burden 11 16 28 74.
His compassion coexists with severe vindictiveness. He comforts the distressed Xia rather than exploiting her vulnerability, but later kills a poverty ghost for exposing embarrassing personal details. When threatened by violent inmates, he cripples the group and kills its leader; during the Jiang family conflict, he kills nearly everyone attempting to escape 97 103 242 283.
Yichen is openly flirtatious and possessive. He enjoys attention from women, sometimes imagines inappropriate uses for his abilities, and tries to conceal inconvenient romantic developments. When confronted over having several girlfriends, he refuses to choose one and promises to treat them all fairly 7 313 401.

- Can visibly rejuvenate people: Elder Mo’s wrinkles diminish and beard turns black, while Elder Wang’s hair also returns to black 355.
- Can be channeled into a weapon or used against magical attacks, including tribulation lightning and Old Man Tang’s lightning net 64 130.
- Fuse with his nascent soul after his breakthrough. Haoran subsequently teaches him a Flame Control Technique to improve their use 367 370.

Movement and Spatial Magic
- Discovers that he can fly after reaching Golden Core, though his early handling of rapid travel is imprecise 62.
- Uses teleportation to leave Mo Yurou and later disappears through spatial magic after accepting Hidden Dragon Manor 122 254.
- Continues using ordinary transport when flying openly would be inconvenient 321.
