Power Progression

The following milestones document Xu Yan’s cultivation and the development of his magic power, rather than independent levels belonging to magic power itself.

Cultivation Mechanics

• Formation: Drawing spiritual qi into the body is not sufficient to become a cultivator. It must gather in the dantian and be converted into the practitioner’s own magic power 6.
• Conversion: The Spirit Guiding Art directs incoming energy toward the dantian, where its qi vortex transforms that energy into magic power. Medicinal energy from Qi Gathering Pills can undergo the same process 17.
• Breakthroughs: At Xu Yan’s second-layer breakthrough, accumulated power surges and compresses under the spinning vortex until his dantian expands. He then continues cultivating to stabilize the new realm 18.
• Spiritual roots: Root quality and attributes affect cultivation speed and potential. Under otherwise identical conditions, a method matching a cultivator’s root attribute is more efficient than a mismatched method 17 19.
• Technique-dependent properties: The Azure Wood Art produces rich, enduring magic power, while the Taiyi Five Elements Art converts power into a five-element form 52 53.

Five-Element Magic Power

• Requirement: Practitioners must perceive the five elemental energies within ordinary heaven-and-earth spiritual qi before they can convert it into five-element magic power 53.
• Strength: The Taiyi Five Elements Art demands several times more spiritual energy per level than ordinary methods, but promises power unmatched by cultivators at the same level 52.
• Major-realm cost: Advancing from Qi Refining perfection to Foundation Establishment requires roughly ten times as much magic power as an ordinary cultivator needs 105.
• Endurance: Xu Yan’s unusually abundant reserves let him operate the Azure Flood Dragon Furnace for a three-day refinement at the eighth Qi Refining layer—an expenditure ordinary Qi Refining cultivators could not sustain 99.
• Energy purification: While absorbing the Demon Embryo’s vital essence, Xu Yan uses the art to refine away demonic qi, retaining energy that strengthens his magic power 122.

Magic power supplies the energy behind offensive techniques; control, comprehension, and physical conditioning determine how effectively that energy can be used.

• Redfire Burning Art: Aptitude and magic power determine how many flame masses a practitioner can condense, up to nine. Spiritual sense controls and compresses them for an explosive attack 26.
• Evolved fire technique: Xu Yan’s raging magic power feeds nine enormous fire lotuses after his understanding of fire evolves the Redfire Burning Art into a divine ability 200.
• Annihilation Demon Finger: Its strength increases with both the practitioner’s flesh and magic power. Its forbidden strike additionally consumes essence blood and lifespan, or substitutes a living being marked with a Slave Talisman 119.

Artifact Activation and Refinement

• Weapons and shields: Cultivators pour magic power into flying swords and defensive artifacts to activate them 32 59.
• Artifact refinement: Xu Yan channels magic power into the Black Tortoise Shield while refining it 60.
• Formations: Sending power into the inn’s jade slip activates its protective composite formation 17.
• Inherited records: A wisp of magic power illuminates the patterns and characters on the Taiyi Five Elements Art’s beast-hide scroll 53.
• Disguise items: Channeling power causes the Lin lineage’s mask to merge with Xu Yan’s face and assume an unfamiliar appearance 31.

Movement, Protection, and Physical Utility

• Travel: Xu Yan uses magic power to climb a cliff and later expends it during sustained Foundation Establishment flight 25 125 133.
• Environmental protection: Circulating power resists volcanic heat and protects him inside the Millennium Fire Lotus’s scorching cave 111 136.
• Enhanced vision: Channeling power into his eyes lets him see through the fire-filled lotus cave 111.
• Moving objects: He uses power to move enormous boulders and seal cave entrances 34 98.
• Force projection: A casual burst creates a fierce gale that sends approaching villagers sprawling 133.

Specialized Cultivation Arts

• Bloodfiend Shadow-Escaping Steps: Uses essence blood as its catalyst, divine sense as its furnace, and magic power as its source 60.
• Ancient Demon Nine Prohibitions: Channels magic power to commune with heaven-and-earth might and condense prohibition runes. Their complexity places separate demands on divine sense 124.

Replenishment

Limitations and Vulnerabilities

• Finite reserves: Killing Ji Heng and Li Xiaotian consumes more than half of Xu Yan’s power. Flying another thousand li nearly exhausts him despite the Taiyi Five Elements Art 133.
• Technique costs: At his cultivation level when first testing Sword Qi Like Rain, Xu Yan estimates that three uses would exhaust his magic power. His Greenedge Sword also nearly breaks after one full-power strike 85.
• Overexertion: A desperate flame burst against three pursuers badly damages his meridians and leaves most of his reserves spent 79.
• Poison interference: Century-Old Corpse Poison causes power to stagnate and become difficult to circulate. The Green Pearl removes the poison before it can finish disabling him 25.
• Environmental suppression: Demonic qi in the Demonfall Pit makes circulation sluggish and slows spiritual-energy absorption 73.
• Green Pearl consumption: The Pearl periodically absorbs Xu Yan’s own magic power, explaining his slow cultivation. It previously devoured Golden Light Daoist’s power as well 34.
• Detectable fluctuations: Combat releases fluctuations that other cultivators can sense and that may attract cultivators or demonic beasts. Breath-concealing techniques can suppress these outward signs 32 60 63.
• Distinct resources: Divine sense and essence blood are not interchangeable with magic power; specialized arts may require all three. Golden Core core aura is separately accumulated through learning to draw on the surrounding world’s power 60 206.
