Background and History
Founding and Succession Crisis
The Crimson Sun Sect traced its origins to a youth with spiritual roots who left Thousandfire City roughly a thousand years earlier and subsequently founded the sect. Danyangzi established it through a long cultivation career marked by the deaths of countless opponents 140 147.
By Xu Yan’s arrival, Danyangzi was approaching the end of his lifespan, but the sect had produced no Golden Core successor. His grandson and sect master, Li Changfeng, admitted that his chances of surviving the Golden Core tribulation were below twenty percent 145 147.
Danyangzi considered two ways to improve Li’s prospects: obtaining calamity-averting yuan magnetism for a life-bound treasure, or resorting to a demonic core-formation method that would leave Li in continual agony. Recruiting rogue cultivators was part of the preparation for the latter contingency 147.
Defense of Thousandfire City
Heavenly Cripple Old Devil, Blood Corpse Daoist, and Blue Old Devil attempted to sacrifice Thousandfire City, despite its ties to the sect. An early-stage Foundation Establishment representative confronted them and announced that the sect had been alerted; Blue Old Devil killed and drained him. The Blood Corpse then hunted down the remaining sect cultivators in the city 140 141.
Danyangzi arrived before the sacrifice was complete. His Golden Core aura shattered the Blood Sacrifice Formation, freeing the surviving residents, and he pursued and killed all three attackers 143 144.
Recruitment of Xu Yan
Danyangzi credited Xu Yan with delaying the attackers and offered him a Guest Elder position. He swore a heavenly dao oath that he intended no harm, promised freedom of movement, and waived the requirement to leave a divine-sense imprint. Xu Yan accepted primarily to recover his vitality and gain access to the sect’s resources 144.
Xu Yan entered under the name Lin Dao. Danyangzi’s subsequent decision to let Guest Elders compete for Golden Marrow Jade Dew Pills provoked objections from established elders. He suppressed the dispute with Golden Core pressure and reaffirmed that outsiders would not be forced to become formal members 146.
Great Yan Ancient Mine Expedition
The sect discovered traces of a rare treasure through a miner who accidentally entered the mine’s Inner Region by teleportation. His Projection Pearl preserved information about the discovery, although he died before investigating it. The leadership sought calamity-averting yuan magnetism while withholding its identity from the expedition’s ordinary participants 164 174 186.
All Foundation Establishment elders, including Guest Elders, were ordered to participate. Danyangzi appointed Li Changfeng commander and supplied an expendable jade seal capable of delivering three attacks at his full strength. Five Guest Elders received Golden Marrow Jade Dew Pills before departure 168.
The expedition exposed the sect’s treatment of outsiders. After an unexpected formation killed a cultivator, Elder Qi selected Xu Yan and Zhou Li to scout the route. When Zhou fled, Qi killed him and forced Xu Yan to take the lead. Xu Yan negotiated for Zhou’s pill and secretly used his ability to sense formations to benefit from the assignment 174 175.
A beast tide forced the Crimson Sun Sect to cooperate with the Gu Household’s Black-Scaled Riders and the Ten Thousand Fire Sect. The expedition later reached Ghost Cry Valley, where the sought treasure lay inside an enormous insect nest 176 186.
Only about a dozen sect cultivators returned. Li Changfeng failed to obtain the yuan magnetism, leaving Danyangzi’s preferred succession plan unfulfilled 194.
Blood Core Scheme
After the failed expedition, Danyangzi sealed the sect for a year and activated its true protective formation. He subsequently brought captured Foundation Establishment rogue cultivators back to the sect for a blood-sacrifice scheme 194 195 196.
Danyangzi imprisoned the captives in a Blood Pool beneath the Blood Baleful Prison Formation, then targeted Xu Yan and Shen Changyun despite his earlier assurances. He openly declared that his approaching death made the heavenly dao oath’s consequences irrelevant 197.
By the time Li Changfeng believed a legendary Blood Core was forming, Danyangzi had fallen. In reality, Xu Yan’s Mysterious Green Pearl was consuming the pool’s energy and feeding it back to him, enabling his breakthrough to late Foundation Establishment 199.
Destruction and Looting
When the prison formation opened, Xu Yan emerged instead of a Blood Core. He killed Li Changfeng and Elder Qi, both half-step Golden Core cultivators, destroying the sect’s remaining senior leadership 200.
The Mountain-Bearing Demon Tortoise then betrayed the sect and began devouring its disciples. Xu Yan killed the remaining Foundation Establishment elders, including Fang Shan, and slaughtered the other disciples. The protective formation prevented their escape; by the end, every remaining sect cultivator had been killed 201.
Xu Yan and the tortoise divided the surviving treasury contents in a seventy–thirty split favoring Xu Yan. Danyangzi had already removed more than half the Treasure Pavilion’s contents. Xu Yan then took control of the sect’s third-tier formation, dismantled it, and collected the recoverable components 202.

- The headquarters stood among ancient trees, spiritual lights, and clouds of condensed spiritual energy 145.
- Its main hall was built entirely from high-grade second-tier purple sandalwood approaching a thousand years in age. The fragrance soothed the mind and strengthened resistance to inner demons 145.
- Before the full protective formation was activated, subsidiary-peak residents had to defend their cave abodes with their own formations 147.
Alchemy and Resources
Alchemical Specialization
- Third-tier pill refinement — Danyangzi was an alchemy master capable of refining third-tier pills. He offered Xu Yan access to everything except the sect’s most central legacy 144.
- Golden Marrow Jade Dew Pill — Danyangzi spent more than ten years gathering its ingredients and initially expected to produce three to five pills. Distribution was based on contribution points, limited to one per elder; the pills later became payment for the mine expedition 146 168.
- Ginseng Essence-Restoring Pill formula — Xu Yan purchased this mid-grade second-tier formula for 2,000 contribution points. Each pill restored ten years of lifespan, with a maximum of three effective doses per cultivator 148.
- Jade Zhi Golden Ginseng shortage — The sect could not supply the five-hundred-year-old ginseng Xu Yan needed. Its last specimen had been redeemed by the grand elder more than ten years earlier 149.
Mine Expedition Compensation
Guest Elders were offered the following in return for entering the ancient mine 164:
- One Golden Marrow Jade Dew Pill.
- 10,000 contribution points.
- Access to the Treasure Pavilion.
Defenses and Guardian Beast
Protective Formations
| Formation | Rank | Capabilities and Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Routine sect-protecting formation | Top-grade second-tier | Covered only the Main Peak, leaving all eight subsidiary peaks outside its protection 147. |
| Ninefold Starlight Demon-Slaying Formation | Third-tier composite | Enveloped the entire sect. Danyangzi strengthened it with essence blood and one year of lifespan, claiming its accumulated power could resist a Golden Core cultivator for a month 195. |
| Blood Baleful Prison Formation | Rank not stated | Confined the Blood Pool’s victims and corrupted them with blood baleful intent; cultivators below Golden Core had virtually no chance of escape 197. |
- The third-tier formation is also rendered Nine Instruments Starlight Demon-Slaying Formation and Nine-Ritual Starlight Demon-Slaying Formation 201 202.
- Its barrier trapped the sect’s own disciples during the massacre. Xu Yan later refined its control banner over roughly ten days; dismantling it destroyed single-use materials and dissipated its stored stellar power 201 202.
Mountain-Bearing Demon Tortoise
- Raised by Danyangzi and honored by disciples as Martial Uncle Qingxuan or Granduncle Qingxuan 201.
- Transported the sect’s expedition party and could disguise its enormous body as a mountain 194 195.
- Secured Danyangzi’s promise of freedom upon his death 195.
- Betrayed the sect to consume cultivators and pursue advancement to the third tier, devouring around two hundred disciples during its destruction 201 202.
External Relations
- Thousandfire City — The founder’s hometown and a city under the sect’s protection. Danyangzi intervened when three demonic cultivators attempted to sacrifice it 140 143 144.
- Immortal Alliance — Membership required a Golden Core protector and gave access to tightly controlled spiritual treasures. Every ten years, the sect had to provide cultivators for a five-year garrison deployment; its approaching quota was ten Foundation Establishment elders and fifty Qi Refining disciples 149.
- Ten Thousand Fire Sect — Rival over cultivation resources and a co-controller of the ancient mine. Its Golden Core leader pressed Danyangzi to submit, although the factions temporarily cooperated against the beast tide 149 170 176.
- Dark Moon Sect — Resource rival and fellow mine controller. Danyangzi suspected it would cooperate with the Ten Thousand Fire Sect to divide his sect after his death 149 170.
- Gu Household — Shared control of the ancient mine and competed for its treasure. Its Black-Scaled Riders joined the Crimson Sun Sect’s defensive formation during the beast tide 164 176.
