Background / History

Yang Family Origins

The Yang clan’s ancestry reaches back to the Eastern Radiance Ancient Kingdom, also called Eastern Splendor. Its lineage was established to perform sacrificial rites intended to preserve the royal bloodline, with the obligation extending to every direct descendant. After Emperor Zhetian’s death and the kingdom’s fall, the Yang ancestors withdrew into obscurity 614 615.

The family’s surviving instructions included a duty to recover the lost Shadow Jade. Yang Qing’s recognition of a disguised piece establishes his connection to the Fen Household, whose ancestors served the Yang Family and received the jade as an official seal. The destruction of his ancestral home left him remembering only a fraction of the Yang teachings 337.

Childhood and the Fire Calamity

Yang Qing was raised as a young master of a wealthy household. Before the disaster, he was expected to lead the Yang Family’s next generation and improve its fortunes. Jiang Zhizhou lived in Western Chu with him from childhood, although Yang Qing also remembers an acquaintance who entered his life before Jiang did 260 370 630.

A fire destroyed the Yang household and the foundations it had built over centuries. More than two hundred family members died. Yang Qing survived with lasting injuries, a disfiguring facial scar, and a body too damaged for conventional martial training 117 248 630 710.

Concealed Identity

For more than a decade, Yang Qing wore a false face. He served as Yang Chengming while treating the former Yang Qing as someone who had died in the fire. This separation also allowed him to deny Murong Qian’s suspicions and keep her family from becoming implicated in his dangerous affairs 38 40 139 247.

In Northern Liang, he adopted the merchant identity Jia Qing and claimed origins in disaster-stricken Zi City. Jiang Zhizhou and Chen Mo arranged household-register entries to support the cover, taking advantage of records lost in the city’s earlier catastrophe 146 148.

He eventually chose to remove the false face despite the expected pain and his belief that he had only months left to live. Divine Doctor Xue performed the removal, after which Yang Qing wore a silver half-mask over his scarred side 247 248.

Appearance

Yang Qing’s original face remains recognizable on one side, while the other is badly disfigured by a long scar. His prolonged illness often gives him a pale, visibly weakened appearance 148 165 248.

  • False face: Worn for more than a decade before its removal 247 248.
  • Silver half-mask: Covers the scarred side of his real face 248.
  • Illness symptoms: Pallor, weakness, fever, trembling, and episodes he conceals from his attendants 148 149.
  • Changed bearing: After escaping the fire illusion at sea, his blood-soaked appearance and controlled killing intent sharply contrast with the refined young man Jiang remembers 474.

Personality

Yang Qing is courteous, guarded, and difficult to provoke. He answers insults, political probes, and accusations with carefully chosen words rather than displaying his suspicions. His outward calm is not an absence of fear: Murong Qian’s questioning leaves him drenched in sweat, and his performance as an insignificant merchant before Duan Hongzhuo conceals intense apprehension 38 64 72 164.

He prefers to control an opponent’s options instead of winning through direct violence. He rejects Bu Er’s proposal to kill Wu Tianyong, seeks divisions within hostile factions, and considers cooperation with Qin Yue when shared interests make it possible 126 149 544.

His loyalty is directed toward people and obligations rather than unquestioning obedience to rulers. He opposes wars pursued for imperial glory, promises Jiang that innocent people will not be punished, and accepts authority over Xiangyang chiefly because it lets him organize relief 139 148 240 643.

The Yang Family’s destruction leaves him torn between justice, survival, and the wish for a quiet life. He distances himself from Murong Qian to protect her, minimizes his own worsening health, and repeatedly imagines retiring or traveling with Jiang. Bu Er eventually helps him escape the recurring fire nightmare and recover his determination to live 117 139 149 397 474.

As the ancient imperial schemes become clearer, Yang Qing grows openly defiant. He refuses to live as a puppet, disputes inherited claims over his clan, and challenges Zhetian even while acknowledging the emperor’s overwhelming strength. He also warns Jiang that pursuing supreme power could turn them into the rulers they oppose 575 628 641.

Abilities & Skills

Military and Political Strategy

Yang Qing combines frontier experience, historical research, and close attention to individual motives 65 126 133 149.

  • Proposes exploiting the conflict between Northern Liang’s emperor and Regent King rather than relying solely on frontier defenses 65.
  • Delays warning Yan Pass about a suspected winter scheme to avoid alerting enemy spies 110.
  • Uses the fragile alliance between Wu Tianyong and Northern Liang as an opportunity to sow discord 126.
  • Orders Western Chu’s soldiers to prepare hot meals during an encirclement, using their available firewood to unsettle the less well-supplied enemy 133.
  • Examines officers’ seniority, favor, and personal connections instead of assuming a faction is uniformly loyal 149.
  • Organizes a Fan River operation intended to succeed without bloodshed; the Fan City Iron Mine subsequently floods 237.

Intelligence, Disguise, and Diplomacy

Yang Qing directs covert associates while keeping their relationships separate from his public identities 66 145.

  • Uses Dark Alliance operatives and Northern Hawk to investigate political affairs 66 121 212.
  • Maintains a convincing merchant cover and speaks flawless Northern Liang during official questioning 146 148 164.
  • Reads coded signals hidden in ordinary objects, including an inn painting and an invitation offering North Mountain Green Tea 226 246.
  • Declines factional recruitment, promotion, and a foreign princess’s marriage proposal without openly insulting those involved 62 64 72.
  • Recognizes when apparent favors are also constraints, including imperial rewards and his appointment as City Lord 68 643.

Formation Craft

His understanding begins with military deployment and develops into practical supernatural formation work 266 735.

  • Infers a concealed formation at Spirit Mountain from its unusual neglect and surrounding terrain; initially presents this as a conjecture 266.
  • Recognizes that the Dragon-Trapping Formation attacks perception as well as restricting the ship 473.
  • Detects the familiar aura of a Spirit-Gathering Formation inside the Shen Household 565.
  • Designs a countermeasure that makes the resentment gathered for Zhetian’s scheme dissipate 639 641.
  • Uses Mo Yang’s aerial observations to identify several overlapping formations above the Demon Grassland 732.
  • Finds and destroys the Invisibility Formation’s eye after recovering from its backlash 735.
  • Limit: His expertise does not include beast taming, which he explicitly distinguishes from formation knowledge 473.

Talismans and Restraint Technique

Unable to depend on martial power, Yang Qing spends years studying talisman drawing. The practice relies chiefly on concentration and commitment 671.

  • Draws Restraint Talismans rapidly with a sword used as a brush 671.
  • Retraces the talismans with his fingers to infuse them with the Spirit-Communicating Pearl’s spiritual power 671.
  • Limit: The Pearl’s full effectiveness depends on his ability to command it 671.

Mind Power and Mental Resilience

The Black Tortoise Deputy General identifies Yang Qing’s Mind Power as exceptionally strong, despite his lack of martial techniques 681.

  • Influences the Nine-Section Whip’s form through a powerful thought about concealing it 681.
  • Stops the overwhelming influx of golden characters inside the Heavenly Stone by ordering them to cease 557.
  • Breaks an apparent mental compulsion when he recognizes the mysterious man confronting him 575.
  • Escapes the fire illusion with Bu Er’s intervention and regains his will to resist death 474.
  • Limit: Entering the Heavenly Stone nearly destroys him; returning his Divine Soul safely requires restraint rather than a mastered soul-projection technique 557.

Blood-Oath Bond and Shared Strength

Bu Er, Jiang Zhizhou, and Mu Feng become linked to Yang Qing as one whole. Jiang and Mu Feng willingly make blood oaths to protect the companions from being isolated and defeated separately 584 585.

  • Briefly draws on the combined power of all three companions 585.
  • Demonstrates the ability by blasting a chair into splinters 585.
  • Shares awareness of the Rootless Wood’s warning with the bonded group 585.
  • The Rootless Wood emerges to heal Jiang after he acknowledges Yang Qing as master 585.
  • Limit: The borrowed power is unreliable; a second attempt immediately after the first produces nothing. Yang Qing reserves it for emergencies 585.

Physical Recovery and Combat Limitations

Yang Qing’s damaged body improves through restorative techniques, bloodline awakening, armor, and Profound Power tempering rather than ordinary martial training 333 673 710.

  • Gains greater agility, easier breathing, and improved bodily control after Jiangli’s tempering method 710.
  • Recovers from formation injuries by meditating on the Wordless Heavenly Book’s method 735.
  • Survives otherwise dangerous blade attacks through formidable defenses 689 691.
  • Limits: A forceful whip strike exhausts his physical stamina and visibly drains his color. Even after the later tempering, he still cannot practice martial arts 689 710.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Rootless Wood — Chooses Yang Qing as its master. Can repel Qiongqi and restore what it touches to its original state; Yang uses it to heal Qin Yue. Its aura must be concealed when the group wants Qiongqi to approach 497 519 561.
  • Bone Jade Thumb Ring / Signet Ring — Bears the ancient numeral one, connecting it to the Holy Envoys’ legacy. A matching ring bears eight. Working with the Rootless Wood, it absorbs the black mist associated with Qiongqi 459 469 523.

  • Sacred Bone Token — A bamboo-segment-shaped object given to him by Wood; Jiangli recognizes it as a legendary treasure 649.
  • Formless — A transformative treasure kept in the black box Wuming gives him after acknowledging his Holy Envoy succession. Yang Qing remains suspicious of the gift’s motive 497 498.

  • Silver half-mask — Replaces the false face after its removal, covering his disfigured side 248.
  • Warm-jade flask — Jiang’s gift, previously used to ease his homesickness while held hostage in Western Chu 139.
  • Fortune Pouch — Gift from the Wandering Monk containing azureleaf; the pouch itself was soaked in azureleaf juice, which could benefit Yang Qing’s chronic illness 184.
  • Prince Ding’s command token — Given by Duan Hongxing alongside a promise that secret guards may assist Yang Qing in danger 247.
  • Imperial rewards — Receives 100 taels of gold, 10,000 taels of silver, and a furnished residence on Central Straight Street for service in Yan Prefecture 68.

  • Duan Hongxing — Prince Ding; negotiates with Yang Qing and offers conditional freedom, a command token, and possible protection 246 247.
  • Fen Liyou / Fan Liyou — Friend connected to the Yang Family’s ancestral retainers. His death leaves Yang Qing without an important source of family history; later revelations explain his concealed protective obligation 337 459 615.
  • Ouyang Lin and Pei Buji — Traveling comrades whose deaths strengthen Yang Qing’s resolve to complete their unfinished work. Yang Qing helps perform Ouyang’s funeral rites and takes responsibility for his ashes 519 584.
