Divine Beast ascension 752 An ancient advancement recalled during the confrontation with Heavenly Law. Jiangli had not experienced heavenly thunder tempering its body again since becoming a Divine Beast.
Resurrection in a new body 606 607 Its soul survives its body’s death. Rootless Wood revives it through the Resurrection Art while dissolving its own blood pact with Yang Qing. Jiangli returns with most of its former abilities lost, but can now communicate directly with Yang Qing through thought.

Background / History

Jiangli originally lived freely as a Divine Beast and accumulated substantial merit. Shortly after Emperor Zhetian became a High God, he forcibly contracted Jiangli through his soul power and used it as an enforcer against his opponents 717.

Zhetian eventually ordered Jiangli to fight a much stronger Divine Beast. Although he could have healed its grievous injuries by spending soul power, he refused and abandoned it to die. Jiangli then invoked the laws of Heaven and Earth, offering its divine soul in exchange for Zhetian suffering a wretched end 717.

Ordinarily, such a murderous oath would destroy its caster first. Jiangli’s accumulated merit—and Zhetian’s interference with its original fate—earned it a reprieve until Zhetian’s soul was completely destroyed. The curse temporarily stripped Zhetian of his High God status, but Jiangli slept for ten thousand years. Upon awakening, it discovered that he had learned to return repeatedly through body snatching 717.

Appearance

  • Build: Tiny, round, and plump, with a piglike body and a horn on its head; its other features do not resemble a pig 284.
  • Fur: Its fur eventually grows long enough to trail along the ground, making it look like a rolling ball of fur 475.
  • Resurrected form: Pure white fur and black, glasslike eyes. Prolonged eye contact gives the impression of a small whirlpool drawing in the observer’s consciousness 607.
  • Changing coloration: Its eyes sometimes changed color before resurrection; it later appears as a gray figure during the confrontation with Zhetian 607 717.
  • Expressive tail: Its tail stiffens like a rod when it becomes enraged and softens as its mood improves 717.
  • Concealed appearance: In the Demon Abyss, it places an illusion formation on its body so outsiders cannot see its true appearance 727.

Personality

Jiangli is proud, blunt, and selective about whom it cares for. It generally regards others as beneath its attention, but makes an exception for Yang Qing and those close to him. Its refusal to soften painful truths is especially evident when it tells Yao Zhuang that his bond with his wife has ended 649 734.

Its lofty manner coexists with vanity, laziness, and increasingly human expressiveness. It prefers lying down to sitting or standing, worries that burning its fur will make it ugly, and becomes comically indignant when Forest Spirits force it to dodge their attacks. It also envies Yang Qing’s extraordinary luck while trying to sound unaffected 717 707 701.

Jiangli’s affection is expressed through teasing, practical guidance, and dangerous acts of protection. It chooses to accompany Yang Qing into the Demon Abyss and later intervenes against heavenly thunder despite trembling at its approach. Nevertheless, it recognizes that shielding its companions from every hardship can interfere with fate and make their situations worse 725 739 752.

Abilities & Skills

Speed and Close-Range Defense

  • Moves too quickly for Yang Qing to notice it climbing from his shoe into his arms; intercepts Pei Buji’s palm strike and halts the accompanying attacks 285 286.
  • Scratches Yang Qing and four skilled companions in rapid succession before they can evade it 521.
  • Defends Yang Qing from Mu Hailin with attacks that numb his hand, blur his vision, and force him backward 384.
  • Cannot claw through Black Tortoise Heavy Armor 701.

Mental Communication and Awareness

  • Before resurrection, conveys intentions through gestures and actions rather than direct speech 419 475 607.
  • After resurrection, communicates with Yang Qing without either needing to speak aloud 607.
  • Temporarily enhances Bu Er and Jiang Zhizhou so they can understand its words rather than hearing only animal cries 646.
  • Uses private mental communication to discuss plans that a powerful observer might otherwise overhear 738.
  • Clears Yang Qing’s mind when he is nearly bewitched, though its intervention is weakened by an opposing restraining force 529.

Formation Knowledge

  • Opens a temporary passage through the Sacred Emperor’s Binding Formation. Because the formation is linked to Yang Qing’s life, even this limited opening injures him; destroying it entirely would likely have killed him 623.
  • Identifies an Invisibility Formation and teaches Yang Qing to approach it with concentrated attention rather than speculation about causes and consequences 734 735.
  • Guides the group through a precise sequence of steps that reveals a hidden, brightly illuminated treasure area 738.
  • Conceals its true appearance with an illusion formation 727.
  • Helps locate Heavenly Law’s protective formation and explains that only Yang Qing can approach and break it because his blood matches its aura 750.

Healing and Energy Guidance

  • Brings Yang Qing sky mushrooms during his attempt to improve his terminal illness 286.
  • Feeds the unconscious Mo Chong red and green fruits from Rootless Wood, restoring his color and normal breathing 523.
  • Cuts Mu Feng around the eyes to relieve the blood reversal caused by the Sacred Emperor’s Shadowless Hand, then orders his eyes covered with clean cloth 623.
  • Channels gathered Profound Power into Yang Qing over two days, strengthening his depleted body without enabling martial-arts practice. The process also removes Zhetian’s soul mark from his bloodline 710.
  • Replenishes strength through deep sleep after the exhausting passage through death and resurrection 612.

Ancient Knowledge and Divination

  • Reads inscriptions that Yang Qing cannot decipher and explains the history of the Immortal Thunder Kingdom 646.
  • Recognizes the legendary Time Gate and describes the blood transformation associated with becoming a citizen of that kingdom 648.
  • Identifies treasures suited to Yang Qing, including the Nine-Section Whip, and advises his companions to seek objects whose auras resonate with their own 680 739.
  • Divines connections between people and treasures, while stressing that foreseen hardships do not make the future completely fixed 739.
  • Recognizes Mo Yang’s half-demon advantage and detects that his exceptional innate talent has been forcibly sealed 725 738.

Countering Supernatural Threats

  • Uses blood gathered from its companions to form three bloody paw prints on Mo Chong’s chest, accompanied by three piercing cries during the Qiongqi crisis 521 522.
  • Retrieves Rootless Wood, whose flowers consume Qiongqi’s black mist while the Bone Jade Thumb Ring absorbs it 523.
  • Explains how to infuse Restraint Talismans with the spiritual power of the pearl inside Yang Qing 671.
  • Proposes destroying Zhetian’s Path to Heaven after Yang Qing rejects the alternative of seizing his Primordial Spirit 702 703.
  • Suggests refining demon grass with heavenly fire to turn the scheme involving the Heaven and Earth Bag against its organizers 737.

Restrictions

  • Loses most of its former abilities when resurrected, and its previous pact with Yang Qing is dissolved 607.
  • Has its Divine Beast power suppressed on Rosy Cloud Mountain 706.
  • Avoids directly fighting Forest Spirits because they can absorb an attacker’s power 707.
  • Remains vulnerable to Zhetian’s surviving master–servant contract, which prevents it from directly harming him once he recognizes its identity 718.
  • Cannot freely intervene in another person’s tribulation: assistance requires that person’s consent and request, or both parties risk heavenly punishment 734.

Relationships

  • Yang Qing — Chosen master and beloved companion. Jiangli initially recognizes him as its master, later remains affectionate after their pact is dissolved, and risks injury to protect him from heavenly thunder 286 607 752.
  • Bu Er — Fellow guardian of Yang Qing and frequent target of Jiangli’s teasing. He mourns its death and fears it has died again when it falls asleep after resurrection 534 607 736.
  • Jiang Zhizhou — Traveling companion who attempts to save Jiangli with medicine after its fatal injury and later helps carry out its energy-gathering instructions 532 533 710.
  • Mu Feng — Companion whose dangerous condition Jiangli treats through an abrupt claw strike; Jiangli’s explanation reveals the Sacred Emperor’s attack was driving his blood toward his brain 623.
  • Mo Yang — Companion whom Jiangli identifies as a half-demon and directs toward the earth core flame as a trial that may restore his sealed potential 725 737 738.
  • Emperor Zhetian — Former forced master and the target of Jiangli’s ancient vengeance. His abandonment caused its death; Jiangli seeks to end his cycle of rebirth 717 718.
  • Rootless Wood — Instrumental in Jiangli’s resurrection, using the Resurrection Art after Jiangli’s body dies but its soul survives 607.
  • Three Realms Immortal Lord — An authority Jiangli challenges over Yang Qing’s fate. Jiangli ultimately reveals that it recognized his manipulation and used his scheme to obtain demon grass power the group needed 725 753.
