Yang Wanqing was already so excited she could barely speak coherently. "Who cares whose it is! Let's go inside first! It's so beautiful!"
Overwhelmed with awe, they walked toward the Ancient Attic, step by step.
The moment they pushed open its door, they were all dazzled once again.
The first floor was a spacious hall furnished with several red sandalwood tables and chairs, with tea sets on the tables. Several landscape paintings hung on the walls, their style simple and ancient, their signatures written in an old script none of them could read. The floor was laid with smooth white jade that felt soft beneath their feet, as though they were walking on clouds.
"This carpet?" Chen Siyao looked down. "It's not a carpet. It's... jade?"
Cai Jingwen crouched and touched it. "It is jade, and it's one solid piece."
Yang Wanqing sucked in a breath. "An entire slab of jade for the floor? How extravagant is that?"
Li Li said quietly, "It's where the Queen Mother of the West lived. A little extravagance is only natural..."
Everyone nodded in wholehearted agreement.
They followed the stairs up to the second floor, where there were several bedrooms.
When they opened the first room, they found a large bed covered in some unknown silk fabric. It felt smooth and cool to the touch, without being cold. Beside the bed stood a dressing table with a bronze mirror and several jewelry boxes. When they opened the boxes, they found them empty.
"This bed..." Yang Wanqing plopped down on it. "It's so comfortable! Even better than the beds in five-star hotels!"
Chen Siyao tried it too, and her eyes lit up. "It really is! What material is this? I want to buy some!"
Cai Jingwen looked toward a corner of the room, where a small bookshelf held several bamboo scrolls. She walked over, gently picked one up, and unrolled it, only to find that she couldn't read a single character.
"Are these books the Queen Mother of the West read?" she asked softly.
Chen Hao stood in the doorway and said evenly, "Possibly."
Cai Jingwen carefully put the bamboo scroll back, a strange feeling welling up inside her. This was a room an ancient goddess had used, a bed she had slept in, books she had read...
It was so surreal.
They continued upward. The third floor was a small loft with windows on all four sides, offering a view of the entire valley. From the windows, they could see the distant waterfall, the nearby stream, and the little grove where Red Dust Fruit grew.
"Wow!" Yang Wanqing turned in a circle with her phone raised. "Guys, look! This is the view from our room! Isn't it incredible?"
In the livestream chat:
[All About Taste: Incredible! Absolutely incredible! I'm so jealous!]
[Yaoyao's Little Red Riding Hood: I want to stay there! I want to stay there! I want to stay there!]
[I Am Ying Zheng: This is a hundred times better than any cliffside hotel or stargazing tent.]
[Commentary: The best part is, they got this house for free!]
[Wind Forest: Wanqing, hurry and check if there are toiletries! Can you take a bath?]
Only then did Yang Wanqing remember the issue. "Oh, right. Is there a bathroom? Can we bathe?"
She ran downstairs and searched everywhere.
Then she discovered something amazing—
Beside every bedroom was a small adjoining room. Each contained a pool built from white jade, with several jade bottles placed beside it. When she opened one, she found a pale golden liquid that gave off a faint, fresh fragrance.
"Is this... shower gel?" Yang Wanqing asked uncertainly.
Chen Siyao leaned closer and sniffed. "It smells lovely! And it's not that chemical perfume smell. It's... the fresh scent of plants."
Cai Jingwen picked up another jade bottle and poured a little onto her hand. The liquid was clear and slippery, with a hint of coolness.
"Could these be the bath products the Queen Mother of the West used?" she asked softly.
The women exchanged looks, seeing excitement in one another's eyes.
Yang Wanqing was the first to take off her shoes. "Whatever! I'm taking a bath! In the Queen Mother of the West's bathroom! What a heavenly experience!"
She rushed headlong into the adjoining room.
Chen Siyao and Cai Jingwen each found a room as well.
Li Li stood in the corridor holding the Wolf Cub, looking hesitant.
Chen Hao came up from downstairs. Seeing her expression, he said evenly, "Go get some rest too. I'll take the Wolf Cub."
Li Li froze, then her eyes reddened slightly. "Mr. Chen..."
"Go on." Chen Hao took the Wolf Cub from her.
Li Li nodded, chose a room, and went inside.
Chen Hao carried the Wolf Cub downstairs and sat in the hall.
The Wolf Cub lay on his lap and soon fell asleep.
He leaned back in his chair, gazing through the window at the distant valley.
Ten thousand years ago.
He had visited this place more than once.
Every time, he had come alone.
This time, it was rather lively.
The corners of his mouth lifted slightly. He closed his eyes and quietly listened to the laughter and exclamations drifting down from upstairs.
An hour later, the women came downstairs one after another.
Every one of them looked radiant, their skin a shade brighter.
"Hao!" Yang Wanqing rushed down, calling excitedly, "What was that bath stuff? I feel lighter all over after using it! My skin is unbelievably smooth!"
Chen Siyao nodded repeatedly. "Yes, exactly! I feel like I can't even see the pores on my face anymore!"
Although Cai Jingwen said nothing, her skin had visibly improved, and she looked fresh and glowing.
Li Li followed behind them, a rare smile on her face as well.
Chen Hao opened his eyes and glanced at them. "That's Spirit Spring Liquid. It's good for your skin."
"Spirit Spring Liquid?" Yang Wanqing's eyes lit up. "Can we take some with us?"
"One bottle will last you a year."
Yang Wanqing immediately turned and ran upstairs. "I'm going to grab a few more bottles!"
Chen Siyao followed her.
Cai Jingwen shook her head with a smile, then walked over and sat beside Chen Hao.
"Chen Hao, thank you."
Chen Hao glanced at her. "For what?"
"For bringing us here," Cai Jingwen said softly. "Lili has been feeling down these past few days, but ever since we came here, she's been smiling more. This place really seems magical."
Chen Hao was silent for a moment before saying evenly, "It isn't magic. The energy here is pure. It can wash away the distracting thoughts in your heart."
Cai Jingwen nodded, then suddenly asked, "Have you been here before?"
Chen Hao said nothing.
Cai Jingwen looked at him but didn't press the question.
A little while later, Yang Wanqing and Chen Siyao ran downstairs carrying a pile of jade bottles.
"What a haul!" Yang Wanqing proudly waved the bottles in her hands. "Enough to last me a year!"
Chen Siyao was also holding several bottles, smiling happily.
Standing to one side, Li Li said quietly, "Isn't taking so much a little inappropriate...?"
"What's inappropriate about it?" Yang Wanqing replied without a trace of guilt. "The Queen Mother of the West isn't here, and she can't use it all! This is called reusing resources!"
Chen Hao glanced at her and said evenly, "You certainly know how to make excuses."
They excitedly explored the Ancient Attic over and over, touching the walls one moment, lying on the beds the next, then leaning by the windows to admire the view. They simply couldn't get enough.
The sun gradually sank toward the west, its golden afterglow spilling into the Ancient Attic and bathing everything in a warm, dreamlike light.
Leaning by a window, Chen Siyao suddenly let out a soft sigh.
"It's such a shame... we can only stay for a day or two."
At that, Yang Wanqing quieted down as well. "Yeah. I still have school, and I have to manage my account. I can't stay here forever."
Cai Jingwen nodded. "There are things to deal with at home too. In the end, we can't let go of our ties to the outside world."
Li Li said quietly, "I'd like to stay here forever too, but... my parents would miss me."
A trace of regret appeared on all their faces.
