Winona took several deep breaths after hearing that. Once she had steadied her emotions, her calm, confident expression returned. She threw a Poké Ball. "Skarmory, I'm counting on you! Use Spikes!"
As the Poké Ball opened, a Skarmory more than twice the size of an ordinary one appeared. With a flap of its wings, countless white points of light scattered across the battlefield.
"Impressive as always, Miss Winona. You've even raised a Skarmory this big." Unfazed by Skarmory's Spikes, Liu Qing recalled Slowking and sent Volcarona out again. Countless white lights immediately appeared and struck Volcarona all at once, making it wince in pain and gasp for breath.
"I didn't expect you to keep switching Pokémon after Spikes had been set up." A confident smile spread across Winona's face. "But I won't ease up on my attacks because of that. Skarmory, use Metal Sound!"
"Volcarona, Bug Buzz!" Liu Qing had originally thought of using Bug Buzz to counter sound-based moves. This was the perfect moment to use it—not to deal much damage to Skarmory, but to block its Metal Sound.
At Winona's command, Skarmory's wings vibrated at high frequency, producing a piercing noise. Volcarona unleashed its Bug Buzz as well. The two sounds clashed fiercely across the battlefield, blending into an even stranger, more grating noise. Both Pokémon faltered and stopped their moves.
"Skarmory, Drill Peck!" Seeing the moves stop, Winona immediately launched an attack. Skarmory's beak spun rapidly as it charged toward Volcarona.
"So fast!" Liu Qing's pupils constricted at Skarmory's speed, and he hurriedly shouted, "Volcarona, jump!"
The red fur around Volcarona's neck immediately blasted flames downward. Using the recoil, Volcarona leaped high into the air and dodged Skarmory's strike. The ground where it had stood looked as though it had been plowed.
