"The second match of the fourth round of the Hoenn League Ever Grande Conference is about to begin! Our two competitors are Liu Qing from Saffron City and Tetsuya from Mauville City. The first half will take place on the Grass Field. What Pokémon will they bring out, and who will advance to the final?" With the Announcer's announcement, the second semifinal finally began.
"Slowking, come on out!" Liu Qing threw his Poké Ball first. As the white light faded, Slowking appeared on the field, perfectly composed with his hands behind his back.
"Go, Shiftry!" Tetsuya followed immediately, throwing his own Poké Ball.
"Liu Qing's first Pokémon is Slowking, while Tetsuya has chosen Shiftry!" the Announcer announced.
"Begin the match!" the referee declared as soon as the Announcer finished speaking.
"Slowking, Water Pulse!" At Liu Qing's opening command, Slowking quickly gathered energy into a blue ball of water and hurled it at Shiftry.
"Shiftry, use Twister!" Tetsuya responded.
Shiftry swept his fan-shaped leaves forcefully, creating a huge whirlwind that rushed toward Water Pulse. The water ball held against it briefly before bursting, releasing a mass of water that the Twister swept up as it continued toward Slowking.
"Twister has broken through Water Pulse and turned into a waterspout! What incredible power!" the Announcer exclaimed.
"Confusion!" Liu Qing ordered with a faint smile. Slowking immediately extended one hand and pointed at the waterspout. A multicolored glow enveloped it, and it reversed course toward Shiftry.
"Confusion may not work on Shiftry, but it can still control an attack and send it back. I imagine Liu Qing anticipated that Shiftry would have some sort of wind move, which was why he opened with Water Pulse. That way, he could ensure he could reflect the attack while doubling its power in the process!" Han
