With only one-on-one battles, the tournament progressed quickly. After the first round produced eight winners, Liu Qing took the field again and continued using Surskit to defeat his opponent's Carvanha. Once the field had narrowed to four winners, he used Mantine to defeat his opponent's Lotad. In the final match, he used Bibarel, whose Hyper Fang pried open his opponent's Clamperl's shell and secured victory on Battlefield Five.
"Next is the battle between Liu Qing, the winner of Battlefield Five, and A Yi, the winner of Battlefield Six. Each competitor will use one Pokémon. Please send out your Pokémon!" As the referee made the announcement, Liu Qing and A Yi, who had come over from Battlefield Six, were both ready.
"Surskit, I'm counting on you!" Liu Qing tossed out a Poké Ball, releasing Surskit, who had enjoyed a good long rest.
A Yi looked about fifteen or sixteen, dressed like an ordinary boy in a short-sleeved shirt and shorts. His expression was remarkably composed, however, and his pale purple eyes brimmed with fighting spirit. He threw his Poké Ball. "Qwilfish, go!"

Liu Qing and A Yi gave their commands almost simultaneously. After two battles, Surskit was already working well with Liu Qing. Pushing against the water's surface with slender legs, Surskit charged toward Qwilfish, trailing a ribbon of white light. At the same time, water enveloped Qwilfish's body, and Qwilfish charged straight back.
With a loud bang, the two collided. Light and water scattered as both slid backward across the surface in opposite directions. Their first probing exchange seemed evenly matched, but Surskit was actually a little weaker. Even after Qwilfish steadied, Surskit continued sliding backward.
