"My sweet darling, thank you for your hard work, Mime Jr.!" Lia said affectionately. She took out a Poké Ball and recalled Mime Jr., then produced another Poké Ball as if by magic. Looking at Max, she said, "Max, I've seen how hard you and Ralts have worked. Now, for my second Pokémon-my darling Chimecho, go!" As the Poké Ball opened, Chimecho floated into the air and gave a cry like the clear ringing of a bell.
"Ralts, can you keep battling?" Seeing Ralts on the ground, panting nonstop, Max hesitated. But when Ralts struggled back to its feet, he gritted his teeth, cast aside his hesitation, and committed himself to his goal. Still, that didn't mean taking on an opponent clearly stronger than Mime Jr. head-on. "Ralts, use Teleport!"
"The same move won't work twice, Max!" Lia reminded him with a smile, then gave her command. "Chimecho, our opponent is tired. Help it get a good night's sleep-Yawn!"
"What?" Max gasped. Chimecho had already spat out a pink bubble, which drifted into Ralts just as it was using Teleport and burst with a pop. Ralts vanished from the spot an instant later and reappeared behind Chimecho, but Yawn's effect had already taken hold. Though Ralts tried to fight it, waves of drowsiness washed over it.
"Ralts!" Max cried anxiously.
"Ohohoho! Chimecho, finish our opponent with Psycho Wave!" At Lia's command, Chimecho swayed through the air. With a clear, ringing cry, its eyes shone, and rings of pale blue light swept outward. In an instant, they sent the sleeping Ralts flying. It crashed to the ground, unable to battle.
"Ralts is unable to battle. Chimecho wins!" the electronic referee announced.
"Ralts!" Max hurried onto the battlefield and scooped Ralts up, his concern tinged with anxiety.
