Background / History

Birth and isolation

Naruto is born to Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze and Kushina. During the Nine-Tails crisis, Minato seals the beast inside his son and dies. Rin brings the swaddled infant to Hiruzen, identifies him as the “son of heroes,” and asks the Third Hokage to look after him 163 216.

His parentage does not spare him from hostility. Adults discriminate against him, children flee when he tries to join their games, and Academy students call him a fox demon. At a little over three years old, he tells Tetsuya that he simply wants friends. Tetsuya, posing as Chiba Satoru, treats him to barbecue despite opposition to an outsider approaching Konoha’s jinchūriki 178 179 196.

Hiruzen refuses Danzo’s request to take custody of Naruto, accusing him of wanting to turn the child into a weapon. Nevertheless, Hiruzen also treats Naruto’s development as a strategic concern: after Sasuke disappears, he prepares plans to strengthen Naruto and deepen his attachment to Konoha 179 219.

Reunion with Kushina

After entering the Ninja Academy, Naruto returns to an empty home while other children leave school with their parents. His reunion with Kushina inside the Sealing Space gives him an opportunity to express years of loneliness and fear. She introduces him to Kurama, who is confined behind the space’s enormous cage 195.

Kushina’s continuing presence makes his life healthier and more orderly. She watches over his studies and training, while Kurama no longer dares sabotage them. Naruto’s grades improve, though he remains well behind the strongest students 196 213 214.

Naruto initially wants to become a Hokage like Hiruzen. Kushina challenges that choice and explains Minato’s sense of responsibility. Naruto then declares that he will surpass every previous Hokage, prompting her to consider how he might learn his father’s Rasengan and Flying Thunder God 216.

Appearance

Naruto resembles Minato, particularly in his blond hair and smile. Rin immediately recognizes that resemblance when she sees him as a child 213.

Personality

Naruto actively seeks companionship despite rejection. As a small child, he chases other children because he wants to play with them; when he befriends Boruto, he becomes so delighted that he forgets his assignment to monitor the newcomer. His cheerful confidence also appears in his promise to protect Team 7 and his ambition to surpass every Hokage 178 216 226 292.

He is hotheaded, competitive, and eager to learn impressive techniques. He nearly charges Zabuza before Kakashi stops him, envies Sasuke’s performance against Haku, and even approaches Madara to request instruction. Academic knowledge and technical explanations can trouble him, but he persists through difficult training 227 234 266 297.

His combat creativity is stronger than his classroom performance suggests. Tetsuya praises his battle intelligence after seeing him combine clones with Flame Bullet. Naruto also uses feints and coordinated attacks to compensate for weaker taijutsu 232 272 317.

Naruto prefers persuasion to war but will fight when negotiation fails. He asks the Raikage and the assembled Kage to stop the conflict, then commits to battle after they refuse. He also distinguishes power entrusted to him for world-threatening crises from power he considers his own, refusing to use Six Paths power merely to gain an advantage over Sasuke 382 386 449.

Chakra reserves and recovery

Naruto’s Uzumaki heritage gives him far more chakra than an ordinary child. His bloodline and Nine-Tails chakra also provide extraordinary recovery 261 272.

• Drawing on recovered memories of his journey to Rōran through the ley line, he reasons that the visitors may come from another point in time. He does not recognize Tetsuya, who notes that he may have died long ago in this Naruto’s timeline 545.
