Lordaeron City had fallen. Faced with overwhelming strength, the undead entrenched within it had crumbled at the first blow.
Taking a city in a single day was something that happened only in myths, yet it had now become reality. It was as exhilarating as it was hard to believe.
To Rex, however, although he would not call it inevitable, the fall of Lordaeron City had been a foregone conclusion. Even Gilneas alone might have defeated the undead entrenched there, though the risks would have been considerable. With aid from the dwarves and high elves, defeat had become impossible. With Stormwind City, Dalaran, and Tir Kul Tiras joining them as well, victory was assured.
Rex walked with heavy steps toward the royal palace in Lordaeron City. It stood at the city's center. The undead elsewhere had already been wiped out; only those inside the palace remained.
"The undead from the other directions all retreated into the palace?" Rex asked Gwen beside him.
Rather than attending to her duties as deputy logistics minister, Gwen was now at Rex's side, serving as his intelligence officer and keeping track of every battle report from Lordaeron City. If Rex wanted to know what had happened on the other fronts, he had to ask her.
Hearing his question, Gwen paused in thought instead of answering immediately. Her delicate face gave her a quiet, reserved air. She and Rona were polar opposites: one as passionate as fire, the other as cool as ice. Yet both were captivating, Rona with her warmth and Gwen with her serenity.
"That's right. The moment the northern gate fell, all the undead abandoned resistance and began retreating into the palace."
"They can forget about holding us off with the palace's inner walls," Rex said disdainfully. He had good reason to say so.
