Outside the Fixed Portal in the Eastern Kingdoms, Rex stood straight against the wind, his eyes quietly fixed on the scene ahead.
A dense sea of people filled Rex's vision. At a glance, they seemed endless, stretching beyond the limits of his sight. There were hundreds of thousands of them.
The crowds covered the hills and plains, packing the entire area around the Fixed Portal.
Plans could never keep pace with change. It was an old truth, and now Rex finally understood what it meant. He had thought that an Alliance force of a little over a hundred thousand would be enough to counter the Burning Legion's threat. Yet only when the crisis actually arrived did he realize how naïve and laughable his earlier assumptions had been.
A little over a hundred thousand soldiers? The army gathered here now numbered a full five hundred thousand.
And that was only the Alliance. Including the Horde and the Night Elves, their numbers would exceed a million. This was a decisive battle, a struggle that would determine whether Azeroth lived or died.
Its scale was far beyond that of the original history Rex knew. In that history, the Alliance forces consisted only of Jaina's troops, and those were battered remnants left after the Undead Scourge's rampage. This time was different. The entire Alliance had joined the war, each member bringing its elite forces together. Compared with the present, the original history Rex knew hardly measured up. It was almost laughable.
A crisis that threatened the survival of the world, yet pitifully few people had actually fought in it. That made Rex realize that the story he remembered still differed from reality.
