"How bad were the losses?" Rex asked anxiously when he saw Darius again. The concern on his face was impossible to hide.

"Impossible to tally," Darius said, looking at Rex with a bitter smile as he slowly forced out the words.

"Give me a rough overview, then?" Rex abandoned the idea of demanding exact figures. Darius and the others all looked disheveled; clearly, none of them had fared well. Archimonde's earth-shattering strike had overwhelmed them through sheer power. There was simply no way to evade an attack like that.

"First, what happened to those hundred thousand or so gnolls and kobolds?" Rex was particularly concerned about this cannon-fodder army. The battle was not over yet. If they had all died before serving any purpose, the news would leave him wanting to kill someone.

"Very few kobolds survived. Their defensive positions were relatively far forward to begin with. When the crisis struck, fewer than one in ten managed to retreat." Seeing Rex's grim expression, Darius offered that explanation, then paused before continuing. "The gnolls were in much the same situation. Your Highness, you must understand how chaotic things were when the crisis struck."

Rex understood what Darius meant. Faced with a threat to their lives, they would naturally consider their own people first. Neither the gnolls nor the kobolds counted as their own. They had been brought in as expendable cannon fodder in the first place. No one would rescue them in the end; during the retreat, their own people came first.
