Banks of dark gray cloud hung low over the earth. It was already late autumn, and the endless trees of Tirisfal Glades stood bare. The Korean pines, their trunks riddled with shrapnel, still lived, standing proudly on the high rocky slopes. Whistles rang merrily through the valley, and white birds flew slowly over the rice paddies.

From inside the hall, Rex gazed outside at the leaves, dyed golden yellow, drifting down from time to time. One, then two, like golden butterflies whose souls had fled. Beneath the sparse, bare trunks and branches, a carpet of gold and red had already spread across the ground.
