King Genn might have fallen a little short of Vincent in cunning, but the insight he had developed over decades on the throne meant that, once Rex had given him a hint, he could hardly fail to notice something was wrong.
An unusual gleam appeared in both King Genn's and Vincent's eyes. Darius was a beat slower to react, but he had not spoken a single word from the outset. Sitting there like a statue, he was easy to overlook entirely.
Seeing that all three understood him, Rex continued explaining. "The Night Elves have run into trouble. They need our help."
"So the position of city lord certainly won't be theirs."
After hearing Rex out, King Genn and Vincent exchanged a glance. Then King Genn nodded at Rex and spoke his mind directly. "You're right, Rex. But if we reject this cooperation on that basis alone, and the Night Elves shut down the Fixed Portal on the other side, the consequences will be considerable."
King Genn had his reservations. Over the past year or more, the Kingdom of Gilneas had unwittingly grown dependent on the Fixed Portal. It had brought the kingdom enormous profits, and those benefits had naturally fostered dependence. Losing it would be a heavy blow to the Kingdom of Gilneas, one that would shake its foundations.
Stability was what King Genn wanted.
