Yet during a fierce battle against the Burning Legion, Neltharion, the dragon guardian of the earth, proposed that he and the other Dragon Aspects each contribute a portion of their power to create a mighty weapon capable of destroying the Burning Legion-the Dragon Soul.
But Neltharion did not pour his own power into the Dragon Soul. Instead, he secretly conserved his strength, then seized the Dragon Soul once the other dragons had finished contributing theirs. He renamed it the Dragon Soul and gained immense power.
However, the Dragon Soul's overwhelming power, combined with his excessive hunger for power, tore his body apart. Fire and heat erupted from beneath his black skin. The burning dragon renamed himself Deathwing, turned upon his own kin, and drove the other dragons from the battlefield. Yet he retained his own mind. Like Sargeras, he chose the path of darkness himself and declared war upon every race other than the black dragons.
