Brilliant sunlight streamed down from the sky, spilling across the land.

Rex and his companions sat in a circle, gnawing on the food in their hands.

The food was simple: just some dry bread. It kept for a long time, was easy to carry, and staved off hunger well. It had plenty of advantages, but it also had one drawback: it tasted awful.

That drawback could be ignored, however. It only tasted awful by the standards of the future. To people in this era who rarely had enough to eat, even this dry bread was a rare delicacy.

And so everyone ate the dry bread in their hands with relish. Not one of them complained.

Rex ate the fastest. He devoured his dry bread in a few enormous bites, picked up the waterskin beside him, and took a long, satisfying drink, his Adam's apple bobbing.

Rex glanced over the people still eating, then asked the man beside him, "Have the scouts returned?"

"Not yet, General." Hearing Rex's question, the man immediately lowered the dry bread in his hand and answered.

"Report to me as soon as there's news," Rex instructed. Then he put the matter aside, found a slope, and lay down quietly to rest.

The Arathi Tribe was only about two and a half kilometers from the plains, a distance they had covered in less than an hour.

The rest of their route lay entirely across open plains, so Rex had sent out quite a few scouts.

But these men clearly lacked proper training and had no sense of how to scout. Rex was disappointed, though he soon realized
