Throughout history, whether in Rex's previous life or this one, a regent had only ever appeared when a kingdom had no sovereign or its ruler was still a child.
In Azeroth, for example, Anduin Lothar had served as Regent when Varian was young. Bolvar Fordragon had taken on the role later, after Varian disappeared and a young king was crowned.
But the Kingdom of Gilneas was now an exception. Its king was alive and well, not remotely young, and at the height of his unrivaled prestige, yet he had announced the appointment of a regent.
After all, a regent's power and standing were no less than a king's.
It was easy to imagine the tremendous stir this appointment had caused throughout the Eastern Kingdoms.
With King Genn still present, Rex's authority as Regent would not grow to the point where his word alone decided everything. Even so, the position held an immense appeal for him, and he had accepted it without hesitation.
He looked up at the Great Cathedral, where a rounded dome combined with stone columns and flat lintels to create a classical elegance.
Of course, that elegance was defined by the standards of the Western world, not Rex's own.
