Before dawn, Jian Potian arrived at the Life-Soul Hall and repeatedly wiped down the Life-Soul Tokens glowing with pale blue light.
"Have the higher-ups noticed something? Why else would they send a rising-star steward like me to guard the Life-Soul Hall?"
"Any little dark force lackey could do this job, yet they sent me?"
Confusion filled Jian Potian's face.
But soon, he broke into a grin.
"No big deal. Since they haven't killed me outright, they must only have a few suspicions."
"I've managed to become a steward, after all, and I'm on good terms with several elders. They can't just kill me on a whim."
Jian Potian glanced at the faintly whitening horizon, relief appearing on his face.
"Another thirty or forty-five minutes at most, and dawn will break."

"They promised three years. Surely they won't tack on another three?"
