Ch. 1821Control against control, pulling every string from behind the scenes
Plot points and events
- Sun Wukong, empowered as the Chaos Demon Ape, keeps Zhunti and Jieyin under relentless pressure. Nuwa is shocked by the brutal pace, while Hongjun refuses to help the two Saints.
- As Wukong’s borrowed strength begins to fade, he deliberately appears exhausted to lure his opponents into attacking.
- He uses Zhunti’s strike to turn his spear around and pierce Zhunti through the heart. He then abandons the spear and slams into Jieyin in a final, apparently suicidal attack.
- All three bodies fall from the chaos. Hongjun senses Luo Hou escaping from Wukong’s weakening form, but the God-Slaying Spear dissolves and Luo Hou vanishes.
- Wukong reverts to his ordinary form and is caught by Hongjun. Lin Tian reassures the group that Wukong merely passed out from overexertion.
- Zhunti survives, but his soul is badly damaged and will take more than a dozen primordial cycles of cultivation to recover. Jieyin asks Hongjun to avenge him; Hongjun’s search of Wukong reveals nothing.
Character developments and interactions
- Sun Wukong proves both resourceful and ruthless: rather than rely on superior strength alone, he engineers a trap and accepts a life-for-life strategy to wound both Saints.
- Zhunti and Jieyin, initially confident enough to seize on Wukong’s apparent weakness, are caught by his feint. Jieyin’s concern for his fellow disciple is immediate, while the cost of the battle leaves him shaken.
- Hongjun remains unwilling to intervene, then becomes frustrated when Luo Hou escapes despite his efforts to track him. His irritation also makes him curt with Jieyin.
- Nuwa moves from astonishment at the combat style to alarm as the fight turns catastrophic. Tongtian admires Wukong’s resolve and trusts Lin Tian’s judgment.
- Lin Tian stays detached and amused, confident Wukong will survive and content to let Hongjun deal with the aftermath.
Significant themes
- Strategy over strength: Wukong wins his opening by exploiting his enemies’ assumptions, not by overpowering them outright.
- Sacrifice and resolve: His apparent willingness to die lets him land decisive blows.
- Hidden forces and uncertainty: Luo Hou’s escape leaves Hongjun—and the other observers—without answers.
- Responsibility and consequences: Lin Tian celebrates setting events in motion while leaving others to handle the damage.
