Background / History
Military Service
Wang Tianlei was born in the mountain village near the Vast Cang Mountains. His family had produced only one son per generation for five generations, making his parents particularly eager for a grandson. Zhou Hua was betrothed to him when she was ten, but his military service delayed their marriage 1.
During three years in Great Jin’s army, he served as a frontier squad leader at Divine Martial City in Yue Prefecture and learned practical military martial arts. Because he lacked influential backing and could not read, someone else took credit for his military achievements. He returned home after completing his service 4 9.
Wedding and Old One-Eye
Soon after his return at nineteen, Wang married seventeen-year-old Zhou Hua. During the wedding procession, he good-naturedly paid Goudanzi a red envelope containing three or four copper coins to end the boy’s ceremonial obstruction of the gate 1 2.
The celebration was interrupted when Old One-Eye attacked Zhou Hua’s bridal sedan. Wang shielded her and fought the wolf with a saber, moving too quickly for the surrounding hunters to intervene. The wolf inflicted deep wounds before abruptly retreating; Wang subsequently collapsed from blood loss 3.
The villagers credited Wang with driving Old One-Eye away. The Black Dragon Society’s later investigation concluded that the beast had held an overwhelming advantage and apparently withdrawn of its own accord, rather than being defeated 9.
Village Leadership and Family
Wang recovered after only a few days of recuperation. With Village Chief Zhou Xing’s support, he became the hunters’ leader and began training the village’s young men. His leadership soon improved both hunting returns and household living standards 3 6.
He remained affectionate toward Zhou Hua rather than blaming her for the supposedly inauspicious wedding attack. During her pregnancy, he became even more attentive and refused to let her perform heavy work 3 6.
When Goudanzi killed a black bear that threatened Wang’s parents, wife, and unborn child, Wang devoted himself to the injured boy’s care. He fetched a doctor from Green Ram Market and helped nurse Goudanzi for two days, temporarily setting aside time with his newborn son. Once Goudanzi awoke, Wang thanked him and returned home to reassure Zhou Hua 10 12.
Appearance
- Build: Big and burly, with a strong constitution 3.
- Wedding clothing: Bright red robes, shredded by Old One-Eye’s claws during their fight 3.
- Voice: Distinctively booming, recognizable to Goudanzi even while he was still dazed 16.
Personality
Wang is brave and protective: he refuses to retreat when Old One-Eye charges and continues guarding Zhou Hua even after sustaining severe injuries. His devotion to her also reassures the Zhou family, who had feared she would be blamed for the wedding disaster 3.
He is generous with his knowledge and unsuspecting around his young brother-in-law. Hoping partly to please his new wife, he teaches Goudanzi everything he knows without realizing how much the child understands. He also values gratitude, demonstrated by his tireless care after Goudanzi saves his household 4 12.
His practical intelligence extends beyond combat. He organizes cooperative hunting and trade, recognizes literacy as a means of improving village prospects, and insists that students respect their teacher 6 7.
Abilities & Skills
Military Martial Arts
Wang’s training combines internal cultivation with external conditioning, using basic but practical arts taught by Great Jin’s army 4.
- Great Strength Vajra Qigong: Produces internal energy; Wang can channel it into his saber to increase its killing power 4 29.
- Bear Demon Fist: A skin-tempering fist art used alongside his internal cultivation 4 9.
- Nine Forms of the War Saber: A battlefield saber technique strengthened by internal energy 4.
- Thousand-Army-Breaking Fist: A military fist technique suited to battlefield fighting; its effectiveness is less impressive in single combat 4 19.
- Physical performance: His speed and strength far exceed those of the village hunters, and he can leap several meters during combat 3.
- Limitations: His education covers techniques rather than their underlying principles. His instruction gives Goudanzi a foundation, but not the deeper martial understanding later supplied by Old Xing 22.
Hunting Leadership
- Trains hunters to coordinate and use rudimentary battle formations 6 10.
- Raises the village’s hunting yield at least five- or sixfold, according to Goudanzi’s estimate 6.
- Reduces casualties so sharply that the few reported injuries come from accidental falls rather than animal attacks 6.
- Organizes collective pelt sales at Green Ram Market, improving returns compared with individual household trading 6.
- Leads hunters bringing surplus game to market, where gathering together helps protect them from exploitation 25.
Teaching and World Knowledge
- Shares information acquired during military service, including geography, the emperor, military affairs, and cultivation basics 4.
- Becomes Goudanzi’s first martial-arts instructor and an important source of knowledge beyond the isolated village 4 18.
- Turns Goudanzi’s suggestion of reading lessons into a voluntary village school for children and hunters 7.
- Works with Old Blind Man to teach village youths to read and write over the following four years 16.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Thick-backed saber — His weapon against Old One-Eye. A blood-red glow appears along its edge as he fights, reflecting his ability to infuse it with internal energy 3 29.
- Flameheart Method manual — Obtained from the battlefield and treasured despite his inability to read its text. Wang studies its diagrams and explains their qi routes to Goudanzi, who secretly memorizes the manual and later cultivates it independently—not through Wang’s instruction 7 8 19.
Relationships
- Zhou Hua — Wife; their affectionate marriage improves her living conditions, and Wang takes particular care of her during pregnancy 3 6.
- Zhou Bao / Goudanzi / Little Leopard — Younger brother-in-law and first martial pupil. Wang later owes him an enormous debt for saving his household from the black bear 4 12 18.
- Unnamed son — Child born after Zhou Hua goes into labor following the bear attack 11 12.
- Zhou Xing — Village chief who recognizes Wang’s value and supports his appointment as hunting leader and instructor 3.
- Old Blind Man — Recruited to teach literacy; he and Wang subsequently educate many village youths 7 16.
- Old One-Eye — Demonic wolf confronted at Wang’s wedding. Wang survives the encounter but does not defeat it 3 9.
