In the end, his short stature left him submerged, and he drowned. Not long afterward, Xie Bi'an returned with the umbrella and discovered that Fan Wujiu had drowned. Overwhelmed by grief, he hanged himself from a bridge pillar.
After their deaths, the King of Hell honored their deep affection and loyalty by appointing them Black and White Impermanence, giving them permanent official posts in the Netherworld.
