Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Immortal | 18 | Recalled retrospectively by Houtu. Even at this realm, he could defeat Taiyi Golden Immortals; she remembers him shattering an ice phoenix and trampling a fire qilin, apparently with assistance from a magical treasure. |
| Great Luo Golden Immortal | 2 | Broke through roughly one hundred thousand years before the opening events. By Chapter 2, he had also mastered the law of silence. |
| Middle-stage Great Luo Golden Immortal | 6 11 34 | Explicitly identified by Taiyi and demonstrated while powering the Spirit-Washing Cauldron. Hou Yi later recalls that Gungun entered this stage roughly ten thousand years earlier. |
| Deeper understanding of the law of silence | 13 | Three years of merit-aided meditation strengthen his comprehension. His subsequent release of the law reaches the Demon Court’s South Heaven Gate, suppressing voices and control of magical power until Taiyi intervenes. |
- Quasi-Saint remains an aspiration: Gungun hopes to sever his good corpse, but no such advancement is documented. Tongtian still identifies him as a middle-stage Great Immortal in the latest supplied chapter 20 50.
- Houtu’s pureblood: He swallows a drop in Chapter 2 and digests it automatically while sleeping. Houtu subsequently reminds him to finish refining it; completion of the intended bodily cultivation is not confirmed 2 3 10.
- The “five million years” remark is not a cultivation forecast: Houtu later explains that it concerns postponing the decisive Witch–Demon war 20 28.
Background / History
Gungun is a transmigrator who has forgotten his previous name. After entering the primordial world, he binds himself to the God-Tier Slacker System, allowing him to grow stronger through idleness rather than conventional training 1.
Before becoming Houtu’s companion, he lived in the Iron-Eating Forest. His later claim that powerful demons bullied him as a helpless cub is fabricated: Houtu remembers him bullying demons, taking their spirit fruits, and stealing their milk 17 18.
He accepts Houtu’s invitation to become her battle pet and mount after considering other prospective patrons. Her plentiful food, access to magical treasures, and expected future connection to the Underworld make her his preferred protector. Many treasures collected by the Witch Race end up with him because its members generally lack the Primordial Spirits needed to use them 2.
His knowledge of future events shapes this choice. He expects the Witch and Demon races to devastate one another, humanity to become the world’s leading race, and the Underworld to offer him a refuge. He later imagines becoming the Eastern Azure Flower Great Emperor, but this is a personal ambition rather than an attained position 1 26 39 50.
Appearance
Gungun resembles a large, fluffy panda, with an endearingly clumsy appearance that conceals considerable strength 1 3.
- Fur: Black and white, with dark circles around his eyes 1.
- Build: An enormous, plump body, chubby paws, and a bulging belly 1 3 38.
- Claws: Sharp despite his cuddly appearance 1.
- Expressions: Frequently displays humanlike satisfaction, helplessness, indignation, and dejection 2 15 43.
- Defensive clothing: Wears black divine armor and a helmet when threatened by stronger opponents 5.
Personality
Gungun is profoundly lazy, gluttonous, and devoted to comfort. He sleeps for centuries, eats while asleep, and often mutes his system’s notifications because listening to them would require attention. His laziness is also practical: sleeping genuinely increases his strength, so he argues that ordinary cultivation may be less efficient 1 8 14 15.
He is cautious around powerful opponents and quick to seek protection. Food can overcome his reluctance to work, while supposed injuries provide opportunities to obtain additional spirit fruits. His grandiose descriptions of himself as an extraordinary god or heaven-blessed genius contrast with his dependence on Houtu and Hou Yi 3 7 9 10 38 50.
His self-interest does not exclude kindness or reliability. He treats Ao Yue without payment after learning that the dragon cannot obtain the fruits he requested. Once he accepts Houtu’s Ginseng Fruit, he considers himself obligated to resolve Mount Xiaoyu’s ghost problem, despite regretting the bargain 5 10.
Gungun is also calculating and capable of deception. He invents an emotional account of Houtu rescuing him to end Ao Yue’s recruitment attempt, disguises his fear of Houtu becoming Pingxin as a nightmare, and avoids giving answers that might offend Gonggong. Nevertheless, his distress at the possibility of losing Houtu reveals genuine attachment beneath his excuses 17 20 25.
His vanity becomes dangerous when provoked. Bifang’s insults about his appearance and intelligence turn a confused exchange into a violent fight, after which Gungun captures the demon god’s Primordial Spirit 34 36.
Abilities & Skills
God-Tier Slacker System
The system rewards idle behavior with cultivation resources and improvements to Gungun’s strength 1.
- Sleeping, sunbathing, eating, and even shifting position can increase magical power, Primordial Spirit strength, physical strength, or slacker points 1 15.
- Points can purchase treasures through system offers. The Yin-Yang Grinding Bamboo costs him 30,000 points 2.
- Treasure maps also appear among his rewards 7 15.
- Muting the notifications does not stop the rewards from arriving 1 10 15.
Law of Silence
Gungun commands the law of silence despite not being a Quasi-Saint, a distinction that attracts both Bai Ze’s surprise and Tongtian’s interest 34 50.
- Suppression: His released law silences demon gods and guards at the South Heaven Gate and disrupts their control of magical power 13.
- Silence World: Draws Bifang’s Primordial Spirit into a separate “Silence World” during their fight 34.
- Shock-wave control: Holds some wind pressure from a Quasi-Saint battle still, allowing him to stop being thrown around 19.
- Mental concealment: Ordinarily makes his thoughts difficult to overhear without detection. It does not prevent Houtu’s unexplained access to his inner monologue 2 27.
- Limits: Cannot restrain the Quasi-Saints fighting near him and is useless for accelerating travel. Taiyi’s Chaos Bell also reverses its effects at the Heavenly Court 12 13 19.
Heaven-Swallowing Earth-Devouring Divine Ability
As the first Iron-Eating Beast, Gungun possesses an innate ability to consume and refine powerful substances 1.
- Can refine a great shaman’s blood essence; his initial refusal is caused by its smell, not inability 1.
- Rapidly processes the spiritual energy contained in large quantities of spirit fruit 10 15.
- Refines his third Ice Crystal Dragon Fruit without lasting harm, despite its intense cold 18.
- Limit: Swallowing the Eastern King’s pure-yang Primordial Spirit causes severe indigestion. He expels it, leaving its essence contaminated 39 40.
Physical Strength and Recovery
Gungun’s strength is far greater than his appearance suggests 18 34.
- Rams Kunpeng while carrying Houtu, sending him flying and helping weaken him before her attack 3 4 5.
- Accidentally kicks away a Taiyi Golden Immortal ghost while asleep 10.
- Forces Bifang backward despite the demon god’s vastly larger body, then punches him hard enough to send him flying and begin destroying his body 34.
- Can recover from the pain caused by the Eastern King’s blast within minutes without medicinal fruit, though he conceals this from Hou Yi 38.
Other Magic and Knowledge
- Portable Minor World: Created a personal world used to store a mountain of treasures, food, and other possessions 2 15 48.
- Flight: Travels on auspicious clouds and can tread through clouds and mist 3 11.
- Invisibility: Conceals both himself and the Spirit-Washing Cauldron while distributing souls among the rabbits 12.
- Divination: Uses finger calculations, though he cannot always identify who is speaking about him 12 37.
- Foreknowledge: Knows broad future developments, including Taiyi’s connection to Ao Yue and Houtu’s eventual transformation into Pingxin. His mistaken belief that Houtu is about to transform shows that this knowledge does not provide reliable timing 3 25.
- Strategic analysis: Identifies the flaw in Ao Yue’s comparison of Witch and Demon military strength: either side could prevent the other from assembling its decisive battle formation 16 17.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spirit-Washing Cauldron — Supreme-grade innate spiritual treasure that draws in souls and resentment. It erases souls’ memories and magical power, restoring their original souls, but merely stores resentment rather than purifying it. Its known capabilities are insufficient to capture Quasi-Saints 11 48 49.
- Vermilion Bird Banner — Supreme-grade innate spiritual treasure. Its Lihuo Light dispels the cold, sinister magical power Kunpeng leaves inside Ao Yue 5 37.
- Dragon Pearl — Gives its essence to Ao Yue to repair his damaged soul. This pearl is separate from the Golden Dragon Pearl Gungun later seeks near Penglai 5 46.
- Yin-Yang Grinding Bamboo — High-grade innate treasure purchased through the system and delivered to his Portable Minor World; its specific abilities are not demonstrated 2.
- Treasure-Fishing Rod — Middle-grade innate spiritual treasure used to reel in treasures and steal milk. It also hooks the concealed golden light containing the Eastern King’s Primordial Spirit 37 38.
- Heaven and Earth Bag — Supreme-grade innate spiritual treasure bought from a limited-time system offer roughly one hundred thousand years earlier. Binds and absorbs targets, but can only imprison them; it cannot erase their memories or magical power 49.
- Treasure-Sealing Box — Can seal treasures of equal or lower grade; used to store the Heaven and Earth Bag 48 49.
- Black divine armor and helmet — Defensive gear donned during Houtu’s confrontation with Kunpeng 5.
- Treasure maps — Gives Xingtian the map to the Warrior God Battle Axe and later asks Hou Yi to retrieve a Golden Dragon Pearl using another map 7 36 46.
Gungun states that he owns five supreme-grade innate spiritual treasures during the attempt to reel in the Eastern King’s spirit; not all five are identified in that passage 37 38.
Relationships
- Houtu — Protector, disciplinarian, and the Ancestral Witch whose battle pet and mount he becomes. She supplies food and treasures, pushes him to prepare for war, and secretly hears his thoughts. His fear of losing her to her future transformation exposes his genuine affection 1 2 25 27.
- Ao Yue — A dragon he helps heal and later befriends despite opposing affiliations. Ao Yue repays him with rare food, unsuccessfully recruits him for Taiyi, and eventually fulfills his promise to bring nine-thousand-year Ren Water Flat Peaches 5 15 17 46.
- Hou Yi — Protective friend who feeds and looks after him, but also carries him into military operations against his wishes. Hou Yi trusts him to handle important tasks despite his habitual evasiveness 24 29 38 49.
- Xingtian — Receives Gungun’s Warrior God Battle Axe map and later helps him reel in the Eastern King’s spirit 7 36 37.
- Gonggong — Houtu’s brother, who persistently calls him “Fatty.” Gungun avoids contradicting him when asked to judge his fighting strength 20.
- Bai Yu / Jade Rabbit — Investigates and touches him while he sleeps invisibly. After Hou Yi becomes her caretaker, Gungun frightens her by asking to roast her and threatening to eat her if she misbehaves 14 22 24.
- Eastern Emperor Taiyi — Offers him a Demon God position and later seeks him as a mount, with the Jade Radiance Twofold-Unity Lamp as an inducement. Gungun rejects the prospect of joining the doomed Demon Race 6 16 17.
- Zhunti — Attempts to recruit him as a western disciple. Gungun respects his future sainthood but refuses the hardship and perceived poverty of life in the west; Houtu also rejects the proposal 26 27.
- Tongtian / Shangqing — Recognizes his unusual mastery of a law and offers to accept him as a disciple. Gungun’s private reaction is refusal because he fears Tongtian’s future conflicts 50.
- Bifang — Accuses Gungun of an old battlefield ambush that Gungun cannot remember. His insults provoke Gungun into defeating him and collecting his Primordial Spirit 34 36.
- Eastern King — Mistaken for a treasure, beaten, swallowed, and expelled by Gungun. Gungun blames him for the resulting injuries and indigestion, then imagines sabotaging his future incarnations 37 38 39 40.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Arc | Gungun’s involvement |

| Rescue of Ao Yue | His prediction of Taiyi’s intervention persuades Houtu to act against Kunpeng. Gungun serves as her mount, helps treat Ao Yue, and is himself caught in Kunpeng’s attempted abduction before Taiyi intervenes 3 4 5 6. |
| Mount Xiaoyu’s ghost domain | Accepts the assignment in exchange for a Ginseng Fruit. He spends ninety years cleansing the demon souls with the Spirit-Washing Cauldron, slowed by naps, snacks, and fishing, then sends them to be reborn among the Soft-Bone Rabbits 9 10 11 12. |
| Reincarnation and the rabbit tragedy | His handling of souls becomes relevant to Houtu’s investigation of the Reincarnation Great Dao. The later clash between powerful fighters kills billions of rabbits, including souls he had only recently sent there to be reborn 13 20. |
| Demon Court recruitment | Counters Ao Yue’s military argument and ends the recruitment attempt with a fabricated declaration of self-sacrificing loyalty. Ao Yue accepts the refusal as sincere 16 17 18. |

| Penglai campaign | Relays Houtu’s reinforcement order, is carried along by Hou Yi, defeats Bifang, and hooks the Eastern King’s surviving Primordial Spirit. His attempt to eat it contaminates its pure-yang essence; after recovering, he goes to collect Penglai’s treasures 29 34 36 37 39 40 44. |
| Golden Flood Dragons | His search for a Golden Dragon Pearl draws him into an attempt to prevent two powerful flood dragons from joining the Demon Race. He brings out the Heaven and Earth Bag, but Tongtian interrupts, captures the dragons himself, and offers Gungun discipleship 46 48 49 50. |
Notable Quotes

“Great Shaman, what happened today taught me something. Supreme-grade innate spiritual treasures aren't so easy to come across, and some things shouldn't be eaten indiscriminately.” 40
