Ch. 401What Is an Ally?
Plot points and events
- Ying Dang activates Tongtian’s Immortal-Killing Sword Formation, unleashing enough of its power to threaten Liu Sheng.
- Liu Sheng counters with the Thousand-Crane Mirror, which absorbs the sword qi and returns it several times stronger. The reflected attacks destroy the formation’s anchors, leaving the Sea-Covering Sword Sect unable to hold its defenses.
- Mo Hai urges Ying Dang to feign cooperation and stall for time, but Ying Dang distrusts the Black Cliff Cave’s notorious treachery. With the array close to collapse, he orders the sect to lower it and surrender.
- Liu Sheng is astonished by the number of Dao-Unification Realm cultivators in Tongtian’s sect. Ying Dang, Mo Hai, Wang Chen, and Zhuge reveal they are Tongtian’s “Sword Slaves”; Nangong Yan says he joined as a member of the sect.
- The Blood Saber Patriarch arrives and denounces the former Blood Saber elders as traitors, expecting Liu Sheng to help him punish them. Liu Sheng instead accuses him of misleading the Black Cliff Cave and rejects his claim to protection.
- Realizing he has been exploited and abandoned, the Blood Saber Patriarch protests that he paid heavily for the Black Cliff Cave’s protection. Liu Sheng dismisses him and attacks with the Thousand-Crane Mirror.
Character developments and interactions
- Ying Dang shifts from defending the sect to accepting surrender when resistance becomes futile, while remaining wary of Liu Sheng’s intentions.
- Liu Sheng demonstrates the mirror’s overwhelming power and becomes increasingly curious about Tongtian. He also reveals that the Black Cliff Cave treats supposed allies as disposable when convenient.
- Mo Hai favors a tactical deception, but Ying Dang chooses open surrender instead.
- The Blood Saber Patriarch goes from swaggering and demanding revenge to realizing he has been betrayed by the very faction he paid to protect him.
- Liu Sheng’s questions about Tongtian’s Sword Slaves suggest he doubts the sect’s structure and wonders what kind of leader would command such powerful subordinates.
