After Shin Uchiha and Kakashi arrived at the home of Karin and her mother, they dispensed with courtesy and went straight inside without knocking.
With only a frail woman and a little girl in the house, neither of its occupants noticed anything amiss when Shin Uchiha and Kakashi entered.
Once inside, Shin Uchiha surveyed the furnishings. There was very little in the room, and it was crude enough to be barely livable. Clearly, life here was difficult for the mother and daughter.
The two people they had come for were fast asleep, nestled together on a simple bed. Shin Uchiha activated his Sharingan to examine them. Little Karin was in relatively good condition, much like any normal child, but her mother, who held her in her arms, was far worse off. Just as Kakashi had described, her chakra was depleted and her body was in terrible shape. Even if the Kusagakure ninja stopped draining her chakra, there was no telling how long she would need to recover. If they continued, she would truly be close to death.
Shin Uchiha and Kakashi took a brief look around the simple room and gained a general understanding of the mother and daughter's living conditions. When they came back together, they exchanged a knowing glance, then looked toward the pair lying on the bed.
Shin Uchiha approached the bedside and reached out to pat Karin's mother gently on the shoulder, waking her from her dreams.
Karin's mother was already weak, and the weaker her body became, the more lightly she slept. Shin Uchiha's gentle pat startled her awake. Flustered, she looked at the uninvited stranger who had entered her home without permission, her eyes full of alarm.
