Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jōnin | 33 | Became a jōnin at twelve, establishing his reputation as a prodigy. |
| Transplanted Sharingan, maintained in three-tomoe form | 54 | Obito’s eye grants copying abilities but remains constantly active. Its chakra drain and Kakashi’s neglect of Hatake Swordsmanship contribute to years of stalled growth. |
| Mangekyō form externally activated | 75 | While Kakashi is unconscious, Qiu Shan stimulates the eye into its three-pointed pinwheel form and copies Kamui. Kakashi does not consciously perform this activation. |
| Guided awareness of the Mangekyō | 79 80 | Qiu Shan explains the eye’s hidden nature and guides Kakashi through recognizing its innate dōjutsu, giving him a basis for later independent activation. |
| Independent Mangekyō activation and Kamui use | 204 205 | Channels his remaining chakra into the eye during Obito’s ambush. Kamui tears off Obito’s left arm, but one use leaves Kakashi nearly unconscious. |
| Sharingan control through a suppression seal | 385 402 | Qiu Shan’s seal allows Kakashi to suppress the eye and release it when needed. The Four Symbols Black Tortoise Seal stops its ongoing drain, though active use remains costly. |
| Mangekyō Sharingan fully fused with his body | 406 | Qiu Shan uses Birth of All Things to integrate the transplanted eye. Maintaining the Sharingan now costs roughly one or two units of chakra instead of ten, making activation smoother and greatly improving efficiency. |
- Unrealized potential: Qiu Shan believes Kakashi could reach super-Kage level by developing Hatake Swordsmanship after the eye’s integration. This is a forecast, not a confirmed advancement 454.
Background / History
Kakashi is the son of Sakumo Hatake, the celebrated White Fang of the Leaf, and a student of Minato Namikaze. His family’s loyalty to the Third Hokage places him firmly within the Hokage Faction. He inherits exceptional talent and excels at Hatake Swordsmanship before receiving Obito’s Sharingan 33 54.
Obito gives Kakashi an eye before his presumed battlefield death. Its possession causes an uproar among the Uchiha, requiring intervention and concessions from the Third Hokage and Minato to let Kakashi retain it. The eye later earns him his Copy Ninja title, but his inability to deactivate it steadily depletes his chakra 11 54.
Successive losses leave Kakashi emotionally stagnant: his father dies, Obito is presumed dead, Rin dies by his hand, and his teacher and teacher’s wife are lost during the Nine-Tails attack. Kakashi suspects Danzō’s rumor campaign helped drive Sakumo to suicide. Although he continues functioning professionally, the Third Hokage recognizes that his grief has extinguished much of his ambition 54.
Appearance
- Build and hair: Tall, with distinctive silver-white hair 54.
- Face covering: Wears a black mask beneath his forehead protector 33.
- Left eye: Usually concealed by an angled forehead protector; contains Obito’s transplanted Sharingan 33 75.
- Anbu mask: Uses a fox mask while serving in the Anbu 33 54.
- Mangekyō pattern: A rotating three-pointed pinwheel 75 204.
Personality
Kakashi’s casual manner conceals persistent grief and harsh self-judgment. He speaks listlessly to the Memorial Stone about his lack of progress and repeatedly interprets battlefield setbacks as personal failure. Rin’s name can still overwhelm his concentration, even during an immediate threat 202 205 405 527.
As an instructor, he mixes teasing, lateness, and calculated pressure. His first meeting with Team Seven includes an excuse about being “lost on the road of life,” followed by an attempt to intimidate the students with killing intent. When Naruto invokes Qiu Shan, Kakashi abandons that approach and redirects their attention toward his graduation test 316 317.
His operational judgment is considerably firmer than his confidence in himself. He protects students even at the cost of exhausting his chakra, checks on Guy’s safety immediately after awakening in hospital, and refuses to return Obito’s eye because doing so would endanger Konoha. He also places mission objectives and civilian welfare above pursuing a retreating enemy 209 395 402 528.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
Obito’s transplanted left eye underlies Kakashi’s reputation as the Copy Ninja 11.
- Tracks fast-moving attacks, allowing him to evade Obito’s enormous shuriken 204.
- Sees through dense mist well enough to locate an enemy 385.
- Originally remains active even while Kakashi is unconscious, continuously draining chakra 75.
- Qiu Shan first mitigates the drain with a suppression seal, then substantially reduces active-use costs by fully fusing the eye with Kakashi’s body 385 406.
Kamui
Kakashi’s Mangekyō dōjutsu distorts targeted space and transfers matter into the Kamui Dimension 204 395.
- Offensive distortion: Tears off Obito’s left arm by warping the space around it 205.
- Defensive removal: Absorbs Kakuzu’s sweeping fire-and-wind attack before it reaches the six genin 395.
- Counter to Obito: Can affect the space in which Obito hides, overcoming his usual intangibility 205 528.
- Limits: Early use rapidly exhausts Kakashi. His initial control is clumsy enough for Obito to begin dodging before the distortion finishes 204 205.
- Post-fusion caution: Qiu Shan interrupts an attempted Mangekyō activation because Kakashi’s existing injuries still make it unsafe 406.
Hatake Swordsmanship
Kakashi’s original specialty is his clan’s swordsmanship, which he neglects after making the Sharingan his primary fighting tool 54.
- Resumes training before the Land of Waves confrontation, although he remains far from mastery 394.
- Blocks Hidan’s scythe with a short blade and rescues Shikamaru and Ino 394.
- Channels Lightning Release through White Fang when confronting Kakuzu 395 397.
- Uses White Fang effectively against enemy shinobi during the Konoha Crush 527.
- Admits that his skill has not yet reached his father’s level 398.
Lightning Release
Kakashi combines lightning-based attacks with cellular stimulation to improve his movement 385 394.
- Chidori: Attempts a close-range strike against Obito, which passes through his intangible body 203.
- Lightning Blade: Charges an enemy concealed in the mist and uses additional lightning stimulation to retreat from Raiga’s counterattack 385.
- Cell Activation Technique: Pushes it to its limit to intercept Hidan before he strikes the younger ninja 394.
- Weapon enhancement: Coats White Fang in lightning chakra; maintaining the coating is difficult when his reserves are low 395 396.
Other Ninjutsu and Anbu Techniques
- Rasengan: Uses Minato’s signature technique against Obito, though it cannot strike his intangible body 203.
- Great Fire Dragon Technique: Attacks Obito while creating enough commotion to alert nearby Konoha ninja 204.
- Shadow Clones: Repeatedly substitutes clones during Obito’s ambush and uses them to buy time for Mangekyō activation 203 204.
- Body Flicker: Demonstrates crisp, efficient movement while serving the Hokage 33 54.
- Camouflage Concealment: Uses an invisibility technique during the Kusagakure mission; Qiu Shan’s Sharingan sees through it 72.
- Anbu communication: Uses hand signals to verify his identity before rejoining allies 72.
Tactical Leadership
- Identifies that Obito becomes tangible when attacking and immediately shares this information with Guy 205.
- Recognizes Kakuzu and Hidan through intelligence supplied to Konoha and understands the dangers of their hearts and blood curse 394 395.
- Organizes Teams Seven and Ten into practiced protective formations around Tazuna 385.
- Assigns Shikamaru an advisory role and limits Karin’s medical support to safe opportunities while he is exhausted 402.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Anbu Service and the Mangekyō’s Discovery
- Receives orders to investigate Root and covertly protect Shisui without following him into the Uchiha grounds 33.
- Guides Qiu Shan through Anbu registration, equipment collection, and the base beneath the Hokage Building 54.
- Is rendered unconscious during the Kusagakure operation. Qiu Shan secretly activates his Mangekyō and copies Kamui, then later explains the eye’s hidden power to him 75 79 80.
Obito’s Memorial Stone Ambush
- Evades an attempted capture through Shadow Clones and recognizes the attacker’s technique from the Nine-Tails assault six years earlier 203.
- Independently activates his Mangekyō and severely injures Obito, but exhausts himself 204 205.
- Survives through Guy’s intervention and approaching reinforcements. After awakening, he reports the attacker’s connection to the Nine-Tails incident 206 209.
- Becomes central to Konoha’s proposed countermeasure once Qiu Shan identifies the two Sharingan as Obito’s original pair 210 211.
Team Seven
- Accepts leadership of Naruto, Sasuke, and Karin after Qiu Shan recommends replacing Sakura with Karin 307 311.
- Begins on poor terms with students who would rather study under Qiu Shan; recovers some authority by announcing an additional graduation test 316 317.
- Continues leading Naruto and Karin after Sasuke’s disappearance, with Sai added to the team 555.
Land of Waves and Recovery
- Protects Tazuna alongside Teams Seven and Ten and confronts Raiga in the Hidden Mist 385.
- Shields the genin from Kakuzu’s composite attack with Kamui, then fights beside Zabuza while Haku draws Hidan away 395 396 397.
- Stops Naruto from pursuing the retreating enemies because another battle could destroy the nearly completed Great Bridge 402.
- Receives full Sharingan integration and healing from Qiu Shan, then resumes supervising the mission 406 407.
- Reports that the mission succeeded and the Land of Waves became a vassal force of Konoha 441.
Konoha Crush and Later Akatsuki Fighting
- Urges Guy to clear surrounding enemies rather than attempt to enter the Crimson Flame Formation 524.
- Survives another attempt by Obito to steal his eye. White Zetsu’s spores drain his chakra and force his Sharingan off before Guy and Qiu Shan intervene 527 528.
- Later witnesses Naruto kill Kakuzu and Shikamaru’s team defeat Hidan. With both threats eliminated, he orders the group to clean up and return to Konoha 559.
