Background / History

Madara led the Uchiha Clan when it joined Hashirama Senju’s Senju Clan and other smaller clans to establish Konoha. According to the Elder’s account, Hashirama initially wanted Madara to become the First Hokage, but Madara relinquished the position for an unknown reason. During his leadership, he concentrated on fighting and left routine clan administration to his subordinates 8 46 197.

His disagreement with Hashirama concerned the future of warfare. Madara foresaw that powerful ninja villages would turn conflicts between clans into wars between nations, eventually drawing civilians and young children into battle. He found the Eye of the Moon Plan on the Uchiha stone tablet and left Konoha, but his clan refused to abandon its newly secured peace and follow him 46.

Madara later fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End to obtain his flesh and awaken the Rinnegan. Although the Senju brothers announced his death, he survived and remained hidden. During those years, he acquired Wood Release, eventually awakened the Rinnegan, and left safeguards and intermediaries to carry out his plan. Obito remembers him in old age connected to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 46 155 243 286 536.

He rescued Obito from the battlefield and fused White Zetsu tissue into his damaged body. His original Rinnegan were secretly transplanted into Nagato while Nagato was an unconscious child, making Nagato the intended keeper of the eyes and a future means of restoring Madara through Rinne Rebirth 67 556 557 637.

Appearance

Madara’s reanimated body restores his youthful, handsome appearance rather than the elderly form Obito remembers 553 556.

  • Armor: Crimson Warring States armor 553.
  • Hair: Described as having the Uchiha Clan’s distinctive hairstyle 553.
  • Reanimation signs: Cracked skin, pitch-black eyes, and a persistent gray, dust-covered cast 553 556.
  • Expression and bearing: An imposing, contemptuous gaze that treats others as beneath him 553.

Personality

Madara is proud, domineering, and unwilling to accept another person’s authority. He answers Orochimaru’s attempt to command him with violence and demands information on his own terms. He enjoys fighting powerful opponents, becomes bored when resistance is inadequate, and deliberately invokes Hashirama’s reputation to deepen Iwagakure’s fear 553 554 562.

His arrogance does not eliminate his capacity for patience or tactical planning. He spent years in concealment after the Valley of the End, accepts warnings about Qiu Shan’s sealing abilities, and devises a diversion around Qiu Shan’s habit of rescuing marked allies. Nevertheless, he regards even a talented younger clansman as an enemy if that person obstructs Infinite Tsukuyomi 286 602 620.

Madara resents the Uchiha for refusing to follow him out of Konoha and dismisses threats against the clan as irrelevant. His interest in its current members is selective: reports of several Mangekyō users attract his attention, but he considers another Eternal Mangekyō only a minor obstacle to his larger objective 578 603 604.

Abilities & Skills

Combat Instincts and Chakra

Madara combines exceptional raw power with the experience to use it effectively. Qiu Shan contrasts his own underdeveloped fighting instincts with Madara’s ability to draw out his full strength 112.

  • Releases enough chakra to trigger Iwagakure’s village alarm without attempting concealment 560.
  • Interrupts Orochimaru’s hand seals through overwhelming chakra and killing intent 553.
  • Evades Kitsuchi’s Mountain Earth Technique before it can crush his Susanoo 562.
  • Anticipates Jiraiya’s attempted Rasengan attack and strikes before he can advance 636.
  • Sees through Killer B’s Eight-Tails tentacle substitute during the capture operation 601.

Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara’s eyes enabled him to control Kurama and remain one of the defining threats of his era 117 118.

  • Tailed-beast control: Reduced Kurama to a puppet and clad him in Susanoo while fighting Hashirama 118 119.
  • Long-term genjutsu safeguards: Left protections deep within the Fourth Mizukage’s consciousness that remained troublesome years after his death 286.
  • Dōjutsu knowledge: Understands the Mangekyō’s progressive blindness and the role of a brother’s sacrificed eyes in obtaining the Eternal Mangekyō 604.
  • Space-time recognition: Detects Kabuto’s activated spatial mark and identifies its Uchiha ocular origin. He has studied space-time techniques but has not awakened a space-time dōjutsu of his own 553.

Susanoo

Madara possessed Perfect Susanoo during his historical rivalry with Hashirama and uses enormous Susanoo manifestations after reanimation 65 562.

  • Overwhelms Iwagakure’s shinobi; only Dust Release and attacks enhanced by the Super Heavy Rock Technique meaningfully hinder its defenses 562.
  • Uses a blue, fourth-stage Susanoo to attack Kumogakure 576.
  • Repairs damage from the Fourth Raikage’s initial strike almost immediately 577.
  • Manifests an individual Susanoo arm to strike Jiraiya without maintaining the full construct 636.
  • Limit: The Fourth Raikage and Killer B’s combined Double Lariat shatters the Susanoo bones surrounding him 585.

Wood Release

Hashirama’s transplanted cells grant Madara Wood Release. Qiu Shan distinguishes this inheritance from Yamato’s incomplete version 112 562.

  • Advent of a World of Flowering Trees: Rapidly fills barren terrain with branches and vines that restrain enemy forces 562.
  • Poisonous pollen: Causes trapped shinobi to become weak and disoriented 562.
  • Tailed-beast suppression: Makes Han’s proposed transformation a dangerous escape option, as Ōnoki recognizes 562.
  • Wood Clone: Sends a clone with Obito and the Zetsus to support the planned Rinnegan theft 620.

Rinnegan

Madara is the original owner of the Rinnegan carried by Nagato. His reanimated body can manifest the eyes even while the original pair remains elsewhere 556 619.

Technique / Function Documented use
Shinra Tensei Blasts away meteorite debris to uncover the unconscious Five-Tails jinchūriki 564.
Banshō Ten’in Pulls Jiraiya toward him, increasing the force when Jiraiya uses Needle Jizō 625.
Preta Path: Chakra Absorption Drains some of Jiraiya’s chakra before discovering that the target is a shadow clone 627.
Tracking safeguard Detects the location of his original eyes in Konoha despite their being sealed 619.
  • Qiu Shan identifies Tengai Shinsei and Limbo: Border Jail as Madara’s dōjutsu that he intends to copy; these passages describe Qiu Shan’s plans rather than an on-page demonstration 178 222.

Sage Art: Storm Release — Light Fang

Madara defeats Jiraiya with a Storm Release attack, leaving him apparently dead. The preceding chapter identifies the technique as Sage Art: Storm Release: Light Fang 636 637.

Reanimated Body

Orochimaru’s improved Impure World Reincarnation gives Madara a near-indestructible body while failing to place him under Orochimaru’s control 553 627.

  • Retains independent movement and decision-making despite Orochimaru’s control seals 553.
  • Finds the body’s lifeless numbness deeply unsatisfying and wants genuine resurrection 603.
  • Vulnerability: Black Zetsu warns that Qiu Shan’s sealing techniques and spatial-sealing Mangekyō ability could neutralize him while he remains reanimated 602.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Crimson Warring States armor — Worn when he emerges from Orochimaru’s summoning coffin 553.
  • Uchiha Gunbai — Handles the weapon while waiting to proceed toward Kumogakure 573.
  • Original Rinnegan — Entrusted to Nagato through a secret transplant; later held by Qiu Shan and secured by Shizune in Konoha 556 574 620.
  • Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Central to collecting the tailed beasts and reviving the Ten-Tails; Madara was connected to it in old age 536 556 601.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Close friend, fellow Konoha founder, and defining rival. Their incompatible ideals drove Madara’s departure; Hashirama’s flesh later supplied the power needed for Wood Release and Rinnegan awakening 8 46 155.
  • Uchiha Clan — Formerly led the clan, but considers its refusal to follow him a betrayal. Retains an interest in unusually gifted Mangekyō users 46 578 603.
  • Obito Uchiha — Rescued successor and operative entrusted with his revival plan. Obito adopts Madara’s name, while Madara criticizes his failure to arrange the intended resurrection 67 240 553.
  • Black Zetsu — Adviser and covert manipulator. Secretly directs events toward Kaguya’s release and regards Madara as his most successful creation 240 578 603.
  • White Zetsu — Scout and intelligence source who reports tailed-beast captures, tracks targets, and accompanies Madara’s operations 560 573 601.
  • Nagato — Chosen keeper of his Rinnegan and intended instrument of Rinne Rebirth. Madara later becomes suspicious when Nagato appears with a Mangekyō Sharingan instead 556 557 637.
  • Orochimaru — Summons Madara hoping to command him, but is overpowered. Madara later wounds him with Susanoo; Orochimaru survives and seeks to provoke a clash with Qiu Shan 553 583.
  • Qiu Shan Uchiha — Respected younger clansman, prospective opponent, and major obstacle to the plan. Qiu Shan deliberately preserves the possibility of Madara’s return to obtain his abilities 112 554 620.
  • Kurama — Formerly controlled through Madara’s Sharingan; remembers the experience as a lasting humiliation 118 119.
  • Jiraiya — Targeted as a route to Naruto and Mount Myōboku, then defeated during the battle near Amegakure 601 620 637.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Return Through Impure World Reincarnation

  • Orochimaru summons Madara using an improved technique and specially prepared sacrifice. Madara breaks out of the coffin, rejects the attempted control, and demands an account of the modern shinobi world 553.
  • Detects Kabuto’s message to Qiu Shan, exposing the spy’s allegiance. Learning of Qiu Shan’s influence in Konoha makes him eager to meet this unexpected opponent 553 554.
  • Rejoins Obito and the Zetsus, finding only five tailed beasts inside the Demonic Statue. News of Qiu Shan’s possible Rinnegan makes him more cautious 556.
  • Leaves his original Rinnegan with Nagato for the time being, intending to use Nagato’s Rinne Rebirth at the appropriate moment 557.

Assault on Iwagakure

  • Openly enters Iwagakure to capture Han rather than accepting White Zetsu’s offer of stealth 560.
  • Uses Susanoo and Wood Release to overwhelm its defenders, then retrieves the unconscious Han from beneath meteorite debris 562 564.
  • Leaves Iwagakure devastated, Ōnoki gravely wounded, and numerous elite shinobi dead, including Kurotsuchi’s father 569 581.

Assault on Kumogakure

  • Attacks Kumogakure for Killer B, dismissing the possibility that retaliation might endanger Konoha or the Uchiha Clan 576 577 578.
  • Faces the Fourth Raikage and Killer B, whose combined attack breaks through his surrounding Susanoo bones 585.
  • Returns with what he believes to be B’s corpse after seeing through a tentacle substitute. The Eight-Tails is sealed into the statue, leaving the Nine-Tails as the final major target 601.

Rinnegan Recovery and the Jiraiya Diversion

  • Learns that Naruto may be concealed at Mount Myōboku and identifies Jiraiya as a possible route there 601 602.
  • Declines to interfere with Itachi and Sasuke’s duel, prioritizing the hunt for Jiraiya over preventing another Eternal Mangekyō 604.
  • Sends Obito, the Zetsus, and a Wood Clone toward Konoha to steal his eyes while his attack on Jiraiya draws Qiu Shan away 619 620.
  • Confronts Jiraiya with Banshō Ten’in and chakra absorption, initially catching only a shadow clone. Their subsequent battle ends with Jiraiya apparently killed by Storm Release 625 627 636 637.
  • Encounters Konan, Nagato, and the resurrected Yahiko. Nagato’s replacement Mangekyō draws his attention to how far his former pawns have escaped his control 637.
