Background / History

Childhood and isolation

Naruto’s parents died protecting Konoha shortly after his birth. The Third Hokage concealed his identity as the Fourth Hokage’s son while spreading the claim that he was the demon fox incarnate. Naruto consequently grew up facing rejection, bullying, expired food, and severe neglect 18 19 116.

Shin initially avoided openly approaching Naruto because contact between an Uchiha representative and the Nine-Tails jinchūriki could provoke the village leadership. A new family

Kōrei introduced Karin as his little sister and began caring for him as her own child. She washed and replaced his clothes, cleaned his room, and provided nutritious meals. Naruto described this period as the happiest of his life 100 113.

Shin later reassured Naruto that his parents had loved him and had not abandoned him. Although he initially postponed revealing their identities, he eventually told Naruto about his parentage before graduation and required him to keep it secret for his safety 116 296.

Academy years

Naruto entered the Academy alongside Karin and Sasuke. Shin gave him additional instruction while teaching Sasuke, helping the two boys become much stronger than their classmates 184 296 301.

Despite his improved upbringing and strength, Naruto remained a prankster. He painted all five statues on Hokage Rock—including his father’s—and led Iruka on a rooftop chase. Tsunade attributed his restlessness partly to Shin keeping him in the Academy despite his chūnin-level ability 296.

His loud, energetic manner can lift the mood of those around him. Choji remarks that Naruto’s enthusiasm makes others happy, while his classmates warmly welcome him after his long absence 441 540. He is also impulsive and sometimes gullible: he signs up for the chūnin exams without understanding them and is the only member of Team Seven fooled by Kakashi’s staged death 382 442.

Naruto wants to become both kind and strong like Minato, gain everyone’s acknowledgment, and become Hokage. His gratitude toward Shin gives him another motivation: he wants enough strength to help the man who supported him as a child 464 572.

His compassion extends beyond his closest friends. He urges his teammates to investigate Sakura’s possible cry for help and considers injuring himself to stop his Rasengan from killing Akamaru 464 477. He also strongly disapproves of Jiraiya’s voyeurism, threatening to report him to Tsunade 534.
