"What was that sound?" The governor had barely finished speaking.

Then they heard the commotion outside again. They rose with grim faces and walked out of the palace in trepidation. By now, they already knew the answer.

Sure enough, once outside, they saw the dragon in the sky.

King Ghidorah's central head tilted slightly upward, and a beam of golden light suddenly burst from her throat. There was no buildup, no warning. Time itself seemed to freeze in that instant. The explanation the governor of Lys had intended to give Viserys died in his mouth.

The Golden Ray, a harbinger of annihilation, pierced straight into the very center of the palace.

Everything the Golden Ray touched vanished into nothingness in an instant. When the golden light faded, an enormous, bottomless hole lay at the center of the palace, its edges as smooth as a mirror.

But that was only the beginning.

King Ghidorah's left head turned toward the eastern side of the palace. Her jaws opened, and a torrent of freezing blue breath poured down, instantly engulfing half the palace. Several nobles standing before the dark hole were frozen into ice sculptures, terror still etched on their faces.

Her right head turned west at the same time, toward a gathering of palace guards and the nobles' private soldiers who were trying to organize resistance. This time, she spewed scorching dragonfire.

A pillar of fire descended from the sky, setting the clustered soldiers ablaze. They curled up and struggled in the flames, but their screams were drowned out by the surging fire. The stench of charred flesh filled the air.

King Ghidorah's attacks were not indiscriminate. Under Viserys's direction, she reduced the palace, a symbol of centuries of prosperity in Lys, to ruins in just a few breaths.
