Viserys took a few steps closer. Shireen shrank behind her mother, but her large eyes still peeked out at him.
Selyse stepped forward, shielding her daughter as she stared coldly at Viserys.
"Then what exactly do you intend to do with us?"
"You are prisoners now," Viserys said. "But for the time being, at least, I will still treat you with some dignity and let you continue living here. Once the war is over, however, you will stand trial."
Selyse's eyes widened as she stared at him in disbelief. But as soon as Viserys finished speaking, he took Rhaenys by the hand and turned to leave.
Only then did Shireen emerge from behind her mother and ask quietly, "Mother, who is he?"
Selyse drew a deep breath, looking toward the doorway through which Viserys and Rhaenys had left. She remembered Rhaegar, whom she had once met, a man who could captivate the women of all Seven Kingdoms. "He... his name is Viserys Targaryen. He is a True Dragon," she answered.
Shireen's eyes lit up. She wanted to ask more, but a look from her mother stopped her. Still, she glanced in the direction Viserys had gone, her eyes full of curiosity about something new.
After Viserys led her away, Rhaenys asked softly, "Brother, are you really just going to lock them up?"
"I'm not locking them up. I'm protecting them," Viserys replied. "If they fell into someone else's hands, they might suffer a fate worse than death. Here, at least, they are safe."
Rhaenys nodded thoughtfully, then leaned into his arms, pressing her cheek against his chest. "Brother, you've gone soft," she murmured.
