Five thousand jars. Tyrion could not help drawing a sharp breath. If he used that much wildfire properly, it really could change the course of the war.

At the same time, a chill of belated fear ran through him. He had never imagined that such a tremendous danger had been buried beneath King's Landing all along. They had been living on the edge of death. If things here ever slipped out of control, the consequences would be unthinkable.

"Very good, Hallyne." Tyrion took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice calm. "Now tell me, can you truly control it? I need it to be used where we need it, when we want to use it."

A trace of gravity appeared on Hallyne's fervent face. "We can, my lord," he said earnestly. "We have secret formulas and techniques for igniting it. But this substance is extremely unstable, so its storage and transport must be handled by members of the Alchemists' Guild."

Tyrion nodded and returned to the cellar, his gaze sweeping over the clay jars stacked on wooden shelves. He could almost see the green fire blazing across the Blackwater Rush, and the enemy screaming amid a sea of flames.

"From this moment on," Tyrion said, looking at Hallyne behind him, his tone turning deadly serious, "you are personally responsible for everything here. Without my orders, no one is to move or touch any of these things. And of course, you are not to conduct any more dangerous experiments here."

"Hallyne, I also need you to gather every other guild member you can find and take stock of all the wildfire. Report directly to Podrick for whatever resources and money you need. We must meet less often from now on. He will be your sole point of contact with me."
