Kevan looked into Tywin's fathomless green eyes, trying to glean more from them, but saw only cold calculation, as though every plan lay firmly within his control.

He fell completely silent, yet the doubts in his heart remained. He hesitated, then finally could not help asking, "What did you send Jaime to do? There has been no word from him for days. I'm worried about his safety."

A complicated look flickered in Tywin's eyes, but they soon grew still again. "Jaime has his task, one only he can accomplish. Kevan, everything will become clear when the time comes. For now, we must hold Harrenhal, preserve our army, and make sure we still have the leverage to bargain properly with Viserys."

Tywin poured a cup of wine and drained it, as though willing Kevan to swallow all his doubts along with it. Then he said, "Send word for Gregor to continue leading his troops in raids on the Northern Army's supply lines, and maintain pressure on the houses of the Riverlands. From now on, Harrenhal's defenses are to be strengthened. No one else is to march out without permission."

He paused, then added, "And write to Tyrion. Tell him to preserve Lannister interests in King's Landing as best he can. If possible, have him find a way to contact Viserys and sound him out. Remember, do not reveal our intentions lightly before the very last moment."

Kevan studied Tywin's resolute profile. Though many doubts remained in his heart, their years together still led him to obey. "I understand, brother. I'll make the arrangements at once."

Tywin waved him away. Silence settled over the room once more, with only the rain outside still sounding. Tywin stood alone before the map, his green eyes gleaming with calculation in the dim light.
