That afternoon, while Viserys was engrossed in state affairs in his study in the King's Tower, a soft knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. "Come in," he said without looking up, his eyes still fixed on the document in his hands.

The door opened, and Rhaenys walked in.

She wore a white silk nightdress whose hem barely covered her pale ankles. She still bore the rosy flush of a recent bath, her skin glowing faintly pink in the light.

Her long black hair hung loose down her back, a few damp strands clinging to her neck. There was a hint of excitement on her face, and her eyes sparkled with delight.

"Brother." She walked over to the desk and rested both hands lightly on it, her voice cheerful. "Meleys suddenly looked much bigger today. When I went to see her, her spread wings could almost cover half the training ground. Her red scales glittered in the sunlight, and her roar was louder than before, too."

"That's good. Dragons generally go through a period of rapid growth. It seems Meleys has reached that stage."

Viserys raised his head. His gaze swept over Rhaenys's thin nightdress and slightly damp hair, and an amused smile curved his lips. "Did you come here just to tell me that?" he teased. "Isn't there anything else you want to say-or do? Coming to my study dressed like this isn't your usual style."

Rhaenys noticed the mischief in Viserys's eyes. Her cheeks reddened slightly, and she shook her head, yet deliberately straightened her back. "Of course not."

Those words sent a thrill through Viserys. He even rose at once and moved toward Rhaenys. After all, she would never have come to his study dressed like this before.

His steps were slow and light, his purple eyes
