Jeyne had still been preparing food for Viserys, but when she saw Ygritte move over to him, she hurried over with her bundle in her arms and sat down on his other side.

The mountain breeze blew up the valley toward their summit, carrying the fresh scent of trees.

Though it was a mountain breeze at night, it was nowhere near as cold as the North. Instead, Ygritte, experiencing the southern air for the first time, found it pleasantly cool.

Once darkness had fully fallen, King Ghidorah raised her right head and sprayed a small shower of sparks into the air. They fell onto the pile of dry wood Viserys had gathered, which burst into warm flames. The orange-red firelight danced, softening everyone's outlines.

Viserys took the flatbread Jeyne offered him. After a bite, he glanced at the women's less-than-pleased expressions and said, "It's still early anyway. Why don't I catch something so we can have roast meat tonight?"

At those words, Rhaenys raised her head and looked at him. She had only gnawed off one corner of the hard, dry flatbread in her hand, and its edges had been torn unevenly. Clearly, she had little appetite.

"Brother, you should have said that earlier. It's already dark now. Where are you going to hunt?" Rhaenys asked plaintively. "Besides, there's nothing but rocks and scrub around here. Is there really any game?"

"There's always game in the mountains." Viserys stood and brushed the crumbs from his hands. "I've been to the Mountains of the Moon before. There are plenty of deer and wild boar here. Just wait here. King Ghidorah will come with me, and we'll be back soon."
