Just as Viserys settled down to work in the king's study, someone knocked on his door. He had expected as much, though; he was already used to it.
The visitor was his new attendant, Lyg, a boy in his early teens who had grown up in Meereen's slave markets. People like him had only gained the chance to study after Viserys liberated Slaver's Bay.
His exceptional ability to learn had earned him a place among the candidates for Viserys's attendants, and now he had become a full-fledged attendant.
As for Viserys's previous attendant, his three-year term had ended, and he had been transferred back to the New City in the Valyrian Freehold to serve as an official. He had also received the hereditary title of viscount of the Freehold-a meteoric rise indeed.
When Lyg arrived for his new assignment, he had brought two letters. One was from Ashara, who hoped Viserys could find time to return and see her, rather than leave her in Valyria for too long.
The other letter came from Kinvara. In it, she had recorded in detail all the prophecies she had received from the Lord of Light during that time.
Of course, the letter also hinted that she wanted to see Viserys. Kinvara suggested, for instance, that with his help, she might be able to receive more numerous and more accurate prophecies from the Lord of Light.
After entering, Lyg first gave a composed bow. His voice still held the slight rasp of a boy whose voice was breaking. Nor did people like him show any awkwardness over their humble origins; he spoke clearly and coherently.
