By the time Viserys reached the battlefield, the naval battle had already reached a fever pitch.
The imperial fleet's formation had been scattered, and at least three ships were burning as they sank. Two more were surrounded by enemy vessels, with brutal boarding battles raging on their decks. Taking advantage of its superior numbers, the allied fleet was trying to divide and surround them.
But the imperial sailors fought tenaciously, especially the veterans who had followed Viserys from the beginning. They steered their fast warships through the enemy formation, striking back with crossbow bolts and arrows.
It was only a small skirmish: ten imperial patrol ships had been surrounded by thirty ships of the allied fleet. Viserys had discovered it while surveying the waters around the Valyrian Peninsula.
Still, Viserys could tell that the enemy's original aim seemed to have been merely to surround his fleet, with no intention of attacking. His own men had even been the ones to start the fighting. He suspected there had to be something behind this.
But he came anyway, because he believed there were few things left in this world that could hurt him. Even so, he remained wary.
Two dragons swooped down.
King Ghidorah's dragonfire swept across two enemy vessels besieging an imperial warship, instantly igniting their sails and decks. Sailors screamed as they jumped into the sea to escape.
Blackflame plunged straight toward the fighting on the other side. A blast of dragonfire struck an enemy ship squarely in its hold. A gaping hole opened in its hull, and it quickly sank.
The dragons' arrival instantly changed the course of the battle. The allied ships began turning in panic, trying to distance themselves from the dragons. But just then-
