Ch. 41Oath of the Dragon Dream (Part One)
- Aegon stays awake after Rhaenyra falls asleep, preparing to act without disturbing her. He summons a small, trusted group to his room: Larys Strong, the Kingsguard twins Alek and Erryk Cargyll, Garwin Hightower, Viry Fell, and Alyn Celtigar.
- Aegon’s companions arrive ready to serve him. The Cargyll brothers and Garwin assume the matter concerns an immediate threat to the prince or princess; Alyn pledges himself eagerly. Viry, by contrast, is alarmed by the suggestion that Aegon intends to kill someone and questions whether such an act could be justified.
- Aegon’s reputation for mercy makes the summons especially troubling to Viry. The others’ unquestioning loyalty—and their confidence that Aegon must have grave reasons—leave Viry feeling like an outsider.
- Aegon reveals that the matter concerns the Targaryen bloodline, the future of the Seven Kingdoms, and the royal family’s lives. He quiets his followers’ alarm, rises with Sunfyre at his side, and begins his explanation: “I had a dream.”
Character developments and interactions: Aegon displays a striking blend of youthful gentleness and emerging authority, while keeping Rhaenyra protected from the secret meeting. Alyn’s loyalty is fervent, the Kingsguard and Garwin are prepared to act without hesitation, and Larys watches with knowing respect. Viry’s moral caution contrasts with the group’s obedience, setting up a potential conflict over what Aegon will ask them to do.
Themes: Loyalty and obedience; the burden of protecting family and dynasty; the tension between mercy and violence; and the uncertainty surrounding prophecy, dreams, and the future.
