Background / History

Tang Fei grew up alongside his cousin Pei Zheng; their mothers are sisters. He trained in martial arts with Pei Zheng under Pei Hu as a child, but quit after half a year because he could not endure the hardship 16.

Although Pei Zheng repeatedly invited him to work for Black Tiger Hall, Tang Fei refused. He had witnessed his cousin sending young girls to a Federation official’s suite and wanted no part in that level of exploitation. Remaining independent also kept their relationship free of a superior–subordinate hierarchy 15 16.

Tang Fei instead led the Flying Dragon Gang from the West Street Arcade. His men collected protection money from local businesses under the label of “sanitation fees,” including payments demanded from Li’s Beef Noodle Shop 13 14.

Appearance

  • Build: Burly and considerably fitter than an average person 15.
  • Apparent age: Looks to be in his early thirties 18.
  • Tattoos: His arms are covered in tattoos; Boss Li worries that his appearance will frighten lunchtime customers 18.
  • Temporary mark: After Jiang Nan’s bullet demonstration, he has a blackened mark on his forehead, which he shows Pei Zheng 16.

Personality

Tang Fei initially relies on swagger, his gang’s reputation, and a pistol to command respect. His confidence collapses when Jiang Nan demonstrates overwhelming speed. Afterward, he becomes ingratiating and persistent, flattering Jiang Nan and offering even menial service in an effort to stay close to him 14 17 18.

He is lazy about martial training and indulgent in drinking and sexual pursuits. Pei Hu describes these habits as longstanding, while Jiang Nan later regards him as an immature man who behaves more like a teenager than someone in his thirties 16 22 25.

His moral reservations do not make him innocent: he rejects Pei Zheng’s exploitation of girls while still extorting shopkeepers himself. His claimed reform begins with a self-serving apology, but he subsequently stops harassing ordinary merchants. Family loyalty remains strong enough that he warns Pei Zheng when Jiang Nan approaches the family’s club 15 17 22 30.

Relationships

  • Jiang Nan — Initially an enemy, later an admired acquaintance whom Tang Fei repeatedly asks to follow. Jiang Nan refuses to take him on but accepts his practical help and eventually promises to look him up upon returning to White Cloud City 14 18 19 33.
  • Pei Zheng — Cousin and childhood friend. Tang Fei refuses employment under him but seeks his help after being humiliated and warns him when Jiang Nan threatens the club 15 16 30.
  • Pei Hu — Uncle by marriage and childhood martial-arts teacher. Tang Fei is intimidated by his authority and meekly accepts his lectures about training and extortion 16 18.
  • Boss Li — Former extortion victim. Tang Fei returns the collected money, apologizes, and helps clean the noodle shop while seeking information about Jiang Nan 17.
  • A-Hao and A-Sheng — Flying Dragon Gang subordinates. They invoke his authority during the noodle-shop confrontation and later receive Jiang Nan respectfully at the arcade 14 24.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Defeat at Li’s Beef Noodle Shop

  • Secretly alerts Pei Zheng and takes detours so the Pei family can arrive at the club first. Despite his divided loyalties, he later drives Jiang Nan to confront Chief Steven at the police department 30 31.

Parting with Jiang Nan

  • Jiang Nan confronts him about warning Pei Zheng but acknowledges that his actions arose from loyalty to his cousin 33.
  • Tang Fei cannot bring himself to ask to accompany Jiang Nan. He is reassured when Jiang Nan promises to seek him out on a future visit 33.
