Background / History
Wanrong was switched with Jiang Yourning at birth and subsequently abandoned. The master of Poison Heart Valley rescued and raised her. She traveled widely, meeting people from many walks of life, before discovering a longevity lock connected to her biological identity 2 69.
Before learning who her family was, Wanrong had already saved two people who would become important to her. Three years before their reunion, she persuaded her senior sisters to help Jiang Yunzhou escape assassins and recover from poisoning, unaware that he was her eldest brother. She also rescued an injured Xie Ciyan, initially presenting herself as a young man; his stay became an exchange in which she treated him while he helped improve her disguise 281 387.
Her journey to the capital was driven partly by her master’s condition. Poison Heart Valley was suspected of creating evil incense because of its expertise in poisons. Seeking to disprove those suspicions and find a remedy, her master repeatedly tested treatments on herself and fell into an unending sleep. Wanrong intended to uncover the incense’s origins, avenge her master, and prevent its spread from devastating Great Yu 69.
Appearance
- Beauty and bearing: Described as beautiful, with a graceful bearing and a generally gentle, dignified manner 13 115 278.
- Male disguise: Sometimes travels dressed as a man; Xie Ciyan helps her refine the disguise during their first encounter 387 388.
- Later appearance: Returns home wearing a fluffy cloak, noticeably taller and seemingly thinner than before 358.
Personality
Wanrong initially approaches her biological family with caution. She hopes for kindness but struggles to adjust when it arrives, requesting time alone after entering her new courtyard. She had planned to use the family’s influence and then leave; their unexpected warmth makes her feel guilty and gradually changes that intention 3 5.
Her soft speech does not make her passive. She stages a sorrowful confrontation after Xie Ciyan breaks their engagement, uses poison during interrogations, and bluntly tells him when his interference has made an operation harder. Her practical, forceful behavior repeatedly overturns his idealized image of a delicate “Little Fairy” 13 389.
Her strongest attachment is to Ningning. She comforts her, protects her secrets, worries about her safety and romantic future, and eventually decides to teach her etiquette personally. Marriage and motherhood do not displace that devotion: when Xie asks whom she would rescue first, Wanrong chooses Ningning and reasons that he should be able to save himself 101 134 308 360 392.
Wanrong can acknowledge someone’s strengths without excusing their harm. After learning more about Chu Zhaohua, she admires her ability and imagines that she might have brought Great Yu a golden age as a monarch, but refuses to forgive what she did to the sisters 286.

- Medical study: Recognizes the long-lost Nine-Turn Soul-Returning Needles manual as a possible means of awakening her master 161.

Her training in Poison Heart Valley supports both healing and offensive uses of medicine 69.

Jialan Insect Art
Wanrong receives a book containing Jialan’s venomous insects, secret arts, and antidotes, later applying that knowledge to Wenzong’s illness 286 374.
- Identification: Recognizes small rove beetles that implant eggs beneath the skin and are easily mistaken for an ordinary illness 374.
- Parasite removal: Uses Little Yuanbao’s blood and medicine to draw worms out through cuts in Wenzong’s palms; they fall into hot water and die 375.
- Aftercare: Explains why the infestation appeared late and warns that the emperor needs time to recover from blood loss 375.
Martial Arts and Lightness Skills
Wanrong possesses martial-arts training and lightness skills before Yourning obtains her own movement skill 152.
- Transport: Carries her younger sister while using lightness skills and offers to take her onto a roof 152 193.
- Combat: Uses blades and medicinal powder together in the Azure Cloud Temple formation 154.
- Physical strength: Uses Xie as a projectile to knock down a captive, then supports him while dragging the prisoner out of the maze 389.
- Limit: Exchanges a few moves with Jiang Yunzhou before swiftly conceding their spar 282.
Hearing Ningning’s Thoughts
Wanrong begins hearing Yourning’s unspoken thoughts during their first reunion and identifies the unexplained voice as belonging to her 2.
- Forewarning: Pieces together the original fate involving her confinement and Xie’s death from her sister’s internal commentary 12.
- Political information: Learns that Little Wukong is the empress’s son and questions the risks of bringing him into the household 27 30.
- Social awareness: Notices reactions that suggest other people may also hear Ningning, including Qing Qianxue 57.
- Scope: The supplied context establishes access to Ningning’s thoughts, not general mind-reading 2 57.
Cooking and Domestic Skills
- Cooking: Prepares a table of dishes to comfort Yourning after a palace visit; her later meal for Xie is only her second attempt at cooking 80 103.
- Poor needlework: Yourning’s thoughts expose her lack of embroidery skill when Xie requests handmade gifts 162.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Return to the Jiang Family
Yourning persuades their parents to recognize Wanrong properly as Fifth Miss rather than acknowledge her while keeping her at a distance. Wanrong receives Bright Azure Courtyard beside Yourning’s residence and is welcomed at a family meal. The affection gradually replaces her intention to remain detached 2 3 5.
Hearing Yourning’s thoughts also reveals that the future is not as harmless as the welcome suggests. Wanrong learns of an original storyline in which Chu Haoze would drug and confine her in the palace, preventing her from investigating evil incense, while Xie would die attempting to rescue her. These are forewarned events, not her eventual outcome 12 69.
Evil-Incense Investigation and Changed Fate
Wanrong discloses her master’s condition to Yourning, who promises family assistance and recalls a palace-maid lead involving a red mole. Wanrong pursues palace contacts, records maids’ details, and obtains Chu Lange’s help in bringing a suspected maid to the Jiang Residence. Later clues lead into the Azure Cloud Temple investigation 69 89 93 150 152.
She joins Jiang He and Youning in confronting Chu Haoze once an antidote lead emerges. After his death, the sisters and Jiang He feel as though heavy shackles have been lifted. The system marks Wanrong’s fate as completely changed 253 255.
Treatment Work and the Border Troops
Wanrong’s collaboration with Ye Tianque produces medicines that can be manufactured for evil-incense victims. She accompanies Wu Qingyuan to Jiangnan and later travels toward West Pass Mountain, where she reunites with Jiang Yunzhou 265 266 278 281.
Moved by the condition of injured soldiers, she studies Youning’s medical-formula book and leaves plants, ingredients, and recipes for medicines and poisons at the General’s Residence 281 283.
Homecoming and Imperial Treatment
Wanrong returns to an emotional family welcome before Jiang Li’s wedding. She comforts Youning over hurt experienced during her absence, exchanges stories with her, and helps with the wedding preparations 358 360.
Later, she diagnoses Wenzong’s rove-beetle infestation and removes the parasites with Youning’s assistance, explaining the delayed symptoms and necessary recovery care 374 375.
Courtship, Marriage, and Motherhood
Xie breaks their childhood engagement before realizing that Wanrong is the rescuer he has been seeking. She accepts his apology but does not immediately restore the match, insisting on respect for her parents’ authority 13 388.
His courtship proceeds through gifts, visits, shared danger, and jealousy. Wanrong eventually answers his insecurity with a kiss beneath a marriage tree. She agrees that he may seek permission to marry her on her Hairpin Ceremony, provided he wins over her parents, brothers, and Ningning 390 391.
After marriage, Wanrong becomes pregnant during their first winter together and later gives birth. Xie eventually abandons his attempt to outrank Ningning in her affections and takes satisfaction in their life as a family of three 392.
