Ch. 181Zheng Wanba Forced the Emperor to Abdicate
Plot and key events
- After helping Qing Qianxue escape the rooftop danger, Jiang Yourning reminds him he owes her payment. Qing agrees to pay the next day. Qian Miao reports that the attackers at the Jiang Residence have been killed.
- At the palace banquet, Zheng Wanba grows impatient while waiting for word that officials’ families have been seized. Chu Wenzong lets him leave, while secretly watching him.
- Xie Ciyan reports that the real Zheng Wanba is dead and that the man at the banquet is an impostor. Chu orders his forces to wait for the right moment.
- The impostor returns with a frightened child and claims the boy is the emperor’s surviving son, allegedly switched at birth and raised by Zheng. He demands that Chu abdicate in the boy’s favor, revealing that his soldiers have surrounded the palace.
- Chu reveals he anticipated the coup. Imperial Guards and the emperor’s trained fighters emerge, but the impostor fires a signal arrow, apparently calling in additional allies.
- Jiang Li, Xie Ciyan, the Crown Prince, and Jiang He attack. Jiang Li knocks the dagger away from the child, who is tossed to safety, and they surround the impostor.
- Consort Zheng rushes into the fight and is stabbed by both the impostor and Xie. As she dies, she drives a hairpin into the impostor’s neck, accusing him of impersonating her brother. The chapter ends with him stunned that his expected reinforcements never arrived and that she saw through his disguise.
